Cottonwood Tucson is situated on a stunning 35 acre campus in the Arizona foothills. Overlooking the city of Tucson, the Southwestern desert landscape is speckled with cacti, providing a perfect environment for reflection. The facility is built adobe-style with all clients sharing a semi-private room with three roommates. With 74 beds, Cottonwood provides a communal atmosphere with basic amenities. The rooms are equipped with queen-sized beds, dressers and an attached bathrooms. Clients can use a rock climbing wall on campus, as well as a ropes course.

Residents at Cottonwood enjoy delicious cuisine, a cornerstone of the treatment program. The award-winning culinary team prepares meals incorporating nutrients that optimize recovery. The menu is healthy, well-balanced and delicious, using fresh meats and organic produce selected daily by expert chef Richard Serna. Most facilities will accommodate dietary preferences and restrictions. Cottonwood goes one step further, winning an award from PETA for vegetarian-friendly menus.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Upon admission, residents undergo a thorough assessment to help the staff determine the best possible program to fit their needs. This process involves a biopsychosocial screening as well as a medical and psychiatric review. If necessary, clients begin with the detox process. This typically lasts between five and seven days. While there are only eight beds in the detox wing, the process includes around-the-clock medical supervision by the nursing staff and addiction specialists. Following detox, clients typically transition into the residential program.

Cottonwood offers an individualized program that utilizes holistic and evidence-based therapies. Lengths of stay vary depending on the specific needs, but typically residents stay for six weeks. Clients participate in group and individual therapy, psychoeducation as well as on-site 12-step meetings. In addition, the facility provides EMDR to treat past trauma.

A well-rounded program, Cottonwood offers a vast array of holistic methods including equine-assisted therapy, yoga, nutritional counseling, mind-body therapy, spirituality coursework as well as acupuncture. There is a comprehensive family program which involves five full days of education and communication training. The goal is for families to learn how to detach from the pain without distancing themselves from the person. Aftercare is a key component to the success of a sustained recovery. To this end, clients at Cottonwood work with therapists to create a relapse prevention plan for continued support following discharge. There is also a strong alumni program.

Cottonwood employs a staff comprised of certified addiction specialists, a nursing staff, physicians, dieticians, Master’s-level counselors and therapists. Many of the staff hold positions at the University of Arizona School of Medicine. Psychiatrists assist with medication management for clients with co-occurring disorders.
