Introduction and Basic Services

Based 10 miles west of Boston in Waltham, Massachusetts, Walden Behavioral Care is a rehabilitation facility that provides treatment for adolescent and adult clients struggling with eating disorders and behavioral health issues. Founded in 2003, the central focus at Walden is treating the whole person; getting to the root of the disorder rather than merely diminishing the symptoms. The Walden Behavioral Care residential eating disorder treatment programs are located in Waltham and at the Rockville Hospital in Vernon, Connecticut. Walden offers a system of treatment that includes inpatient detox, residential care, Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and outpatient, as well as specialized tracks for LGBTQ and athletes. In addition to the inpatient programs, the Walden network also has outpatient facilities at 14 locations in New England and Georgia.

Facility and Meals

Clients in the Waltham residential eating disorder programs are housed in apartment-style units, divided by age and gender. All residents share an apartment but have their own room equipped with storage and modern furnishings. The apartments include some amenities including several common areas, TV and laundry.

The goal at Walden is for clients to re-establish a positive relationship with food. To that end, a key component of treatment is learning about food preparation. The culinary team plans the menu with the assistance of professional dieticians, and prepares three meals per day with snacks readily available. Some dietary preferences can be accommodated.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Before entering residential treatment, clients undergo an assessment to determine the specific issues that need to be addressed, and the staff utilizes this information to create a tailored treatment program. Lengths of stay vary depends on the needs of the client. While in the program, residents have full days with therapy and workshops scheduled from dawn to bedtime. Clients participate in individual therapy three times a week and group therapy five times daily with counselors trained in evidence-based practices like CBT and DBT.

Other programming includes nutrition counseling, psychoeducation, trauma-informed care, relapse prevention therapy as well as holistic approaches like self-esteem work, spirituality work, expressive therapy and body image classes. For clients with co-occurring disorders, dual diagnosis support is also available. In addition, clients that need continued support following the residential program can transfer into one of the outpatient facilities where further therapy and medication management is provided, as well as PHP and IOP.

The Walden team is comprised of psychiatrists, psychologists, case managers, dieticians, a nursing staff, Master’s-level therapists and mental health counselors.

Bonus Amenities

Exposure meals are a key component to the treatment program. Clients go on outings to restaurants to practice having meals in social settings. In addition to the above therapies, clients can also participate in yoga, dance, voice and acting lessons and creative writing.
