Production of TNT’s The Last Ship—a drama that follows life on a Navy vessel after a catastrophe has killed most of the world’s population—has been halted at the request of star Eric Dane, so that he can deal with his depression.

“Eric asked for a break to deal with personal issues,” a representative for Dane told Variety. “He suffers from depression and has asked for a few weeks of downtime and the producers kindly granted that request. He looks forward to returning.”

The show’s production will be on hold through Memorial Day. The show has already been renewed for seasons four and five, and the release of those episodes should not be delayed by the break in production, according to sources that spoke with Variety

Dane, who played Dr. Mark Sloan, known as “McSteamy,” on Grey’s Anatomy, has been open about his struggles with addiction and mental health in the past. In 2011, during his time on Grey’s Anatomy, he checked into a 30-day rehab for an addiction to painkillers.

“Actor Eric Dane voluntarily checked himself into a treatment facility to help him get off of pain medication that he was prescribed for a sports injury that he suffered over the recent hiatus. He reports back to work this week. Business as usual,” his representative said at the time

In 2009, Dane and his wife Rebecca Gayheart, who have now been married for 13 years, were caught in a sex scandal when a tape of the couple and another woman was leaked.

However, since then life has been calmer for Dane. In 2014 he told People magazine, “I honestly think I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be at this moment in time, and I’m really happy.”

He was able to look back on his past troubles with perspective. “We’ve all made mistakes. My one regret is that I got the person I love most wrapped up in all that: Rebecca,” he said of his wife.

Dane, 44, has two children with Gayheart, Billie, 7, and Georgia, 5. In addition to his role on Grey’s Anatomy he is also well-known for a role in the movie Marley & Me. The Last Ship premiered in 2014, and has aired for three seasons. The fourth season is expected out this summer.
