Super Bowl Weekend Saw Record Sales for Marijuana

This year’s Super Bowl was a big win for Big Pot.

According to California’s biggest weed delivery company, Green Rush, this past Super Bowl weekend was the most lucrative weekend in the company’s history. In fact, it eclipsed sales during this past New Year’s, and even national marijuana holiday 4/20.

Super Bowl 50 took place at Levi’s stadium in Santa Clara, California. The state has not legalized recreational pot, yet. But medical marijuana is relatively easy to get, and as a result, joints and edibles are becoming about as commonplace as wine and beer as a fixture at parties and social events. 

Green Rush saw a 310% spike in cannabis delivery orders last weekend, according to director of operations Jude Widmann. “Super Bowl 50 was our highest grossing weekend to date, eclipsing New Year’s Eve,” he said. “We expect to see cannabis and cannabis deliveries in particular to continue to become a more routine, normalized element of all holiday celebrations in the future.”

An Oakland dispensary called Blum also experienced a huge uptick in sales last weekend. The Friday before the game, sales jumped 29% above average in January, and 13% above average on Saturday. Oddly, sales dropped 8% on game day, maybe because everyone had already stocked up? “The Super Bowl weekend is a time for people to have fun and as cannabis becomes more mainstream and an acceptable replacement to alcohol, we’re seeing sales increase on what were typically ‘drinking’ holidays,” said Salwa Ibrahim, executive director at Blum. 

CalCann Holdings, which owns another California dispensary, also reported the highest sales in the company’s history last weekend. “The transition of cannabis into mainstream culture is more apparent than ever, given that the Super Bowl led us to having our best day of sales yet,” said Chris Fancy, a partner at CalCann.

Booming business isn’t all a breeze though, since a sudden increase in demand places stress on sales software and workers. “Many tech companies fail to realize that a surge in transactions often requires more than just robust software,” said Mike Bologna, chief executive officer of Green Lion Partners, a marketing company for pot businesses. “Rather, they also need to anticipate these situations and prepare additional personnel to ensure that the quality of their service is not negatively impacted.”
