Introduction and Basic Services

Founded in 2014, Silvermist is a substance abuse treatment facility situated on 30 acres of land in Renfrew, Pennsylvania, a small village in Butler County only 45 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh. The CARF-accredited organization is a member of Pyramid Healthcare and offers both residential and outpatient programs to adult men and women.

Facility and Meals

The luxurious facility has three residential buildings, which can accommodate a total of 19 clients. Unlike other rehabs where there is uniformity in the rooms, each bedroom at Silvermist is a unique experience featuring various combinations of large floor to ceiling windows, fireplaces and TVs. Silvermist has both semi-private and private rooms available.

The organization boasts other amenities on its campus including a heated pool, a movie theater, a media room and a lush walking path.

Sports and recreation is greatly encouraged, with emphasis put on yoga, which is practiced at least three times a week. There is also an on-site fitness center, as well as outdoor and indoor recreation spaces. To encourage recreation, the facility has a billiard table, an infrared sauna and comfortable common recreation center with a large TV.

The kitchens are very high-end and come with modern amenities and a large refrigerator. At Silvermist, meals are prepared by head chef Adam Lemieux and his team of assistant chefs. They serve three healthy meals a day that consist mostly of fruits, vegetables and fish. The chef is able to accommodate any dietary restrictions or needs. Residents also occasionally help with cooking if they wish.

Treatment Protocol and Team

If clients are undergoing withdrawal symptoms, they are referred to outside Pyramid Healthcare facilities for medical detox.

Individuals in the residential program at Silvermist are required to stay for a minimum of two weeks and this period can be extended to up to three months based on the needs of the client. The facility uses evidence-based therapy techniques such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Experiential therapy and 12-step principles are also integrated as is relapse prevention and psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Silvermist highly encourages clients to attend outside 12-step meetings and provides transportation to and from local AA/NA meetings. The organization is equipped to provide dual diagnosis support with both targeted therapy and medication management.

On a typical weekday, clients in the Silvermist inpatient program begin their day at 7:30 am with medication (when applicable), breakfast and some quiet time. Clients then have an hour of yoga followed by a peer support group before lunch at noon. The afternoons consist of lectures, study time, personal time and recreation with dinner at 5:00 pm. Clients then have group therapy, journal time, evening gratitude and personal time before lights out at 11:00 pm. Weekends are comprised mostly of activities such as cooking, gaming, 12-step meetings and lights out by midnight.

Silvermist runs a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) on the premises with slightly less strict rules than the residential division. The clients in this program meet with their counselors at least twice a week for 30-minute one-on-one meetings.

The organization also offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for clients stepping down from the residential program. The IOP’s length and intensity is based on the needs of the client, and consists of both group and individual therapy.

Silvermist has 18 support staff, with a staff-to-client ratio of one-to-four. The clinical staff consists of LCSWs, CADCs and LPCs. Dr. Frank Kukel, MD is the medical director of the institution and holds several qualifications in pain management.

When clients complete the program, Silvermist aims to make contact with them at least once every seven days to check on their progress. Clients are also strongly recommended to attend local peer support meetings when they leave treatment. Silvermist can facilitate therapy after formal treatment is finished to ensure that alumni are maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Family therapy is also available to ensure that loved ones know and take active duty in supporting the clients.

Bonus Amenities

Some added amenities offered by Silvermist include yoga, meditation, acupuncture and massage therapy.
