Introduction and Basic Services

Located 20 minutes south of Abilene, Texas in the town of Buffalo Gap, Shades of Hope is a residential treatment facility that specializes in the care of clients struggling with substance abuse, eating disorders and co-occurring mental health issues. Founded in 1987 by eating disorder survivor Tennie McCarty, the facility utilizes the 12-step approach to treat the “whole person.” Shades of Hope partners with a local medical detox unit, and provides a curriculum that includes residential treatment as well as a continuing care plan with transitional living. The facility also provides treatment for other addictions including shopping, internet, sex and gambling.

Facility and Meals

Located approximately two and a half hours west of Dallas, Shades of Hope is situated in the historic community of Buffalo Gap and surrounded by centuries-old oak trees that provide ample shade over the campus. Beautiful, natural surroundings set the perfect tone for a recovery journey. The facility offers an intimate environment with only 22 beds. Bonding and accountability are key components to treatment. To this end, every client has a roommate. As a safety precaution, there is no gym on the campus. Instead, the facility offers yoga and encourages clients to walk the grounds for exercise.

Meals are a cornerstone of the treatment at Shades of Hope. The menus are customized to the client, and the culinary staff utilizes dietitian's recommendations. Meals are healthy and nutritious. Fish and poultry are common main courses, and vegetarian and vegan diets are accommodated on a case by case basis. No red meat is served, nor sugar or white flour.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Shades of Hope does not have a detox unit on-site, but can refer clients to a local medical detox before beginning treatment. The facility offers clients three distinct programs: a two-day workshop, a six-day intensive program and a 42-day residential program. While not the thorough experience of residential treatment, the week-long intensive is perfect for those clients fearing relapse and in need an opportunity to re-center themselves in recovery. For those individuals that cannot make a week-long commitment, the two-day intensive weekend program offers a condensed version.

Shades of Hope utilizes individualized plans tailored to the specific needs of each client. A vast array of methods are used in both group and individual settings. These include CBT, DBT, REBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI). Group topics include overall wellness, relapse prevention, anger and stress management. In the evenings, clients can participate in on-site and off-site 12-step meetings.

There is a family week towards the end of the residential program. During this time, the facility educates families on setting boundaries and communication, as well as the addiction as a disease model. Clients and therapists discuss aftercare options with family members. These include transitional living, and develop a personal continuing care plan.

The Shades of Hope treatment team includes therapists, a clinical director, admissions director, a psychiatrist, a registered nurse, a nutritionist and dietician. For clients with co-occurring disorders, a staff psychiatrist provides individual therapy and medication management.

Bonus Amenities

Every Saturday, residential clients take a trip to nearby Abilene for lunch. This offers a chance to bond outside the facility, as well as opportunity for exposure therapy for those with eating disorders. There are visiting hours on Sunday afternoons between 2 and 4 pm.
