Introduction and Basic Services

Located on the famously luxurious island of Bali in Indonesia, roughly a five-hour flight from Australia, Seasons Bali offers a number of different levels of residential treatment. Also available are limited Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and on-going counseling.

The facility treats substance abuse and dual diagnoses. Seasons Bali opened in 2011 with a one-on-one treatment program spearheaded by founder Richard Smith, an experienced GradDip-level (Graduate Diploma) drug counselor. Smith has run the Raymond Hader Clinic, a residential facility in Melbourne, Australia, since 1998 and has since expanded the organization into five clinics across the country.

Facility and Meals

The facility is a two-story home flush with traditional Indonesian décor with a modern twist, including wraparound balconies and airy, open areas downstairs where counselors can meet with clients. Seasons Bali is near the white-sanded Bali beach, perfect for a run or simply relaxing in the sun. At the house is an outdoor pool with a gazebo overlooking the well-manicured grounds for clients to enjoy the tropical climate.

Seasons Bali treats a maximum of 12 clients at a time. Rooms are private with en-suite bathrooms and come complete with a housekeeping staff.

Fresh flowers are placed throughout the residence to remind clients of the beauty that surrounds them. A lounge area features modern couches arranged in a circular manner so clients can easily commune.

The rustic dining area has a large, wooden table for clients to enjoy the nutritious weekday meals prepared with local ingredients by the facility’s private chefs. The head chef’s specialties include Japanese fusion and Italian, European and Indian cuisines. On weekends, residents are taken out to restaurants in the surrounding town.

Group sessions take place on the balcony, where clients can enjoy the fresh air while learning.

Treatment Protocols and Team

Treatment begins with a medical evaluation and the assignment of a case manager as well as a partner resident who helps the client during his or her first week. Detox is available with around-the-clock care.

The recommended stay is 90 days, but there are also 28- and 60-day programs available which can be extended upon request.

Clinical staff includes an on-call medical doctor, nurses, a PhD-level psychologist who specializes in gestalt therapy, a GradDip-level therapist, an HIV and addictions therapist and a yoga instructor. Interestingly, the clinical director, program coordinator, therapist and case managers are all also in recovery and can personally relate to clients’ struggles.

A typical schedule begins with exercise, meditation or stretching. Breakfast is served between 8 and 9 am. On weekdays clients have a 10 am check-in with their counselor and program coordinator. Afterwards, residents participate in a mix of one-on-one therapy, group sessions, educational seminars, creative therapies, exercise or free time until roughly 3:30 to 5:30 pm. There is a nighttime 12-step meeting, after which clients have free time. On the weekdays lights out is at 10 pm.

Individual counseling takes place once a week. Treatment modalities include CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), and experiential therapy, learning to establish healthy boundaries, trauma therapy, mindfulness, process groups and solution-focused therapies. Group sessions focus on honesty, processing negative emotions, establishing self-esteem, identifying triggers, dealing with denial, acknowledging cross-addiction, avoiding isolation and dealing with long-term withdrawal.

A range of aftercare options are offered, including referrals to local therapists or support groups, transitional housing, IOP or ongoing counseling in-person or on Skype. Clients can choose to stay in Bali to have access to the IOP, which includes a daily check-ins and therapy sessions. Sober companions who return home with the client are also available. Those who require additional support are offered one-on-one treatment services lasting anywhere from 15 to 90 days with residence at a separate, private villa.

Individualized programs for relapse prevention are also provided in the form of a specific aftercare plan dealing with the client’s living and family situation, triggers, level of support and overall health. These matters are also dealt with during residential group therapy.

Bonus Amenities

Meditation, nutritional care, creative therapies, exercise, hot stone massage and body alignment are available. Yoga takes place three times a week, and beach exercise is offered twice a week. Recreational outings are scheduled as part of treatment.

A five-day family week is available, and an alumni day is held in June.

Summary

Seasons Bali offers treatment in a stunning location, ideal for those looking for a relaxing, private setting in which to recover. With staff members who are also in recovery, residents can be sure that they will have someone to whom they can relate.
