Introduction and Basic Services

Since 2004, The Refuge in Ocklawaha, Florida has offered a back-to-nature treatment approach to adult men and women who are struggling with addiction, whether it be a chemical dependency or sex, gambling or eating disorders. An experienced staff facilitates individualized programming with 12-step support and evidence-based therapy methods that takes place in the remote and serene setting of the Ocala National Forest.

Facility and Meals

The private and secluded campus is on 94 acres of land surrounded by thick forest and wildlife. Up to 60 clients are accommodated, an men and women reside on different sides of the grounds, with the women’s facilities sleeping three to a cabin, and the men’s sleeping up to five. The cabins are very simple with nothing beyond beds and places to store personal items, which is done on purpose as the staff wants their clients to spend as much time outside as possible. There are common areas inside however, like a game and recreation room and dining hall. There is also an on-site pool.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Treatment at The Refuge meets clients exactly where they are from the moment they set foot onto the campus. For some the initial step is detox, and The Refuge offers a seven to 10 day Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) to help ease clients through this first phase. During detox clients also participate in group and individual therapy once they are stabilized and feel up to it.

The residential stage combines an array of treatment approaches to create a holistic, client-centered program. A day may include morning meditation, community check-ins, then breaking into smaller group of six to nine for group therapy, step work or assigned reading or writing. The afternoon consists of a different group of clients and therapists, individual therapy, finishing any assignments that haven’t been completed, or simply having some time to relax. There is also a family program week of experiential therapies, psychoeducation and one-on-one therapy sessions.

Treatment methods can include CBT, EMDR, hypnosis, psychodrama, equine therapy, and adventure therapy. There are also daily AA meetings both on and off-site.

The Refuge has a medical staff with two psychiatrists, a medical director and RN. The clinical staff consists of several Master’s-level therapists, LCSWs and LMHCs.

Bonus Amenities

There is a ropes course, volleyball and basketball court, and fishing dock. Additionally, The Refuge offers acupuncture, Reiki, yoga, art and music therapy, hiking and biking.

Summary

The Refuge lives up to its name by providing a safe place to get clean and learn how to stay that way. In some cases clients stay there for up to a year, which allows ample time to begin the healing process from trauma, PTSD and whatever else lead them down a destructive past, only to emerge from the program stronger and healthier than ever before. With an array of holistic treatment, 12-step programming and plenty of evidence-based therapy, The Refuge has a lot to offer for someone ready and willing to begin recovery.
