Run under the umbrella of the Recovery Centers of America, The Boston Center for Addiction Treatment offers recovery from substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The suburban facility is roughly 20 miles north of Boston. It provides residential treatment, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and a General Outpatient Program (OP).

Facility and Meals

The campus is state-of-the-art, with a welcoming lobby featuring marble floors and a dark blue accent wall behind a modular desk. The facility is outfitted with modern sculptures and wall art from paintings to large black-and-white photographs of classic movie stars. One communal area sits under a set of clean-lined stairs, with tall-backed beige chairs set in a circle. Thre are 72 beds altogether. Bedrooms are often shared between two clients but can be private based on availability. They have private bathrooms and are outfitted with luxury modern furniture: large beds, end tables, a flat screen TV, armchairs, desks and a wardrobe. Dining rooms are well-appointed with large windows and hardwood floors. A professionally trained chef is on staff to provide restaurant-quality farm-to-table meals like crab cakes with bok choy, potatoes and a sprig of parsley served on a seafood reduction, salads alongside baked chicken with cherry tomatoes and rice or wraps with homemade oven chips. In addition to meals, clients also have all-day access to snacks and coffee.

Treatment Protocol and Team

The Boston Center for Addiction Treatment offers intervention assistance. Detox is available at with around-the-clock monitoring by physicians and nurses. The average stay for detox is seven days.

Staff includes addictions-certified physicians, psychiatrists, patient advocates, LMHCs, CADCs, case managers, NPs, RNs, LPNs, CSWs, MSWs, LICSWs, Master’s- and Doctorate-level primary and family therapists, LADCs, creative therapists and LCSWs. Many clinicians are themselves in recovery, and all staff from the top down to chefs and housekeepers are educated in addiction.

Residential programs typically last 30 days. Treatment includes 24/7 nursing care, individual and group therapies, recreational therapy, CBT, DBT, trauma therapy, TREM therapy, 12-step meetings, psychiatric and psychological services, educational seminars and medication monitoring. Also offered are psychodrama, leadership training, effective communication techniques, relaxation therapy and spiritual counseling. Nutrition counseling is offered, part of identifying and developing healthy eating and general health habits.

Individual therapy takes place twice a week. Educational seminars are offered seven days a week; group therapy takes place five times per week; art and music therapy and spiritual services are scheduled once a week; 12-step multimedia toolkits, group fitness classes, meditation, yoga and individual therapy occur twice a week and 12-step groups meet daily. Group therapy has eight participants per session.

Schedules begin with breakfast and group therapy. They continue on to fitness, lunch and educational group seminars, and finish with dinner, gender-specific groups, off-site 12-step meetings and free time. Electronics must be approved by the client’s therapy team.

Those in the PHP often live at home or in sober living . Clients come to the campus for 25 hours of weekly treatment including group sessions, educational seminars, weekly individual therapy and family therapy. Psychiatric and medical services are also provided. The IOP focuses on development of recovery skills, meeting for three-hour sessions three times a week. Treatment includes individual and group therapy, family therapy, educational sessions for the clients and their families and 12-step meetings. The OP offers one to three weekly 45- to 90-minute sessions as well as psychiatric and medical services.

Family programming features multi-family meetings, learning to avoid enabling, setting healthy boundaries and improving communication skills.

Aftercare includes discharge planning, relapse prevention training and support for reintegration into the community. Alumni services provide ongoing education and support, opportunities to be of service to others in recovery, and interactive online resources and mental training tools.
