Introduction and Basic Services

Covenant Hills, a network of treatment facilities across two different states, runs two remarkable gender-specific locations in San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente, California known as Pacific Hills. These women’s and men’s facilities, respectively, are both just outside of San Diego. The Christian-based rehabs, which have been open for more than two decades, offer residential treatment, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and a transitional program. Pacific Hills also treats those with dual diagnoses.

Facility and Meals

The facilities are gender-specific, both for housing and treatment. Each has 40 beds. The women’s facility is set in a large and secluded Malibu-style home, with a balcony overlooking the patio area on the front lawn. Men’s residency and treatment is located in a series of whitewashed buildings, with a small courtyard and double doors opening onto second-floor balconies. Clients are transported to off-site cross-fit exercise centers.

Dining rooms vary across the campuses. One has tables placed under wall sconces and art-laden walls while the other is a larger space set next to a kitchen and lounge area with a fireplace. A chef prepares meals, offering a continental breakfast and healthy choices like grilled chicken and sauteed vegetables. Group rooms are intimate and outfitted with leather chairs to ensure comfort for clients while they learn and share.

Housing is apartment-style; each unit has a living room outfitted with couches and armchairs next to a kitchen and dining area. Rooms are cozy and fit two to three twin beds, an armoire or wardrobe and often a desk. Homes are located minutes from the beach, making Pacific Hills a relaxing location in which to recover.

Treatment Protocol and Team

There is no detox available at Pacific Hills. Residential stays typically last 30 days, followed by 30 days in the PHP.

Clients can expect individual counseling, group therapy, pastoral counseling, lecture sessions and 12-step programming. Treatment also involves psychological testing and brain imaging done by the renowned Amen Clinic.

The program is Christian-based but also has a “traditional tract” to allow for a wider interpretation of “higher power” as it is presented by the 12 steps. Many group sessions are separated into these two tracts.

Treatment modalities are evidence-based and include CBT, DBT and MET. Also included are life skills training, Christian recovery techniques, family systems, nutritional care, time management skills, stress reduction, recovery skills training, anger management, codependency therapy, goal setting, mindfulness and 12-step programming with scriptural studies. Process groups and psychoeducational lectures take place daily. Those with dual diagnoses meet with psychotherapists weekly.

The PHP offers gender-specific programming during the day for five days a week and co-ed night programming Monday through Thursday. Schedules begin with a devotional and meditation, progressing into educational and process groups with a break in between sessions. During the IOP, clients arrive by 7:30 am and participate in the residential programming before returning home or to sober living elsewhere. Transitional care is offered for cases in which insurance is not accepted and involves a half day of programming and working the 12 steps.

The treatment team includes consulting physicians, LCDCs, CADCs, an LPT, CATCs, an LMFT/Doctorate-level psychologist, an MSW-I, an LCDC-I, ministers and a pastor.

Aftercare is incorporated into treatment and uses the GORSKI-CENAPS model of relapse prevention, which is based on integrative treatment of substance abuse and biopsychosocial circumstances. Additional aftercare offerings include meetings for practical instruction, interactive process sessions and support groups.

Bonus Amenities

A cross-fit exercise program is offered throughout the week.

With its gender-specific and -separate housing and programming, Pacific Hills offers an atmosphere where clients are free from the typical distractions of co-ed programs. It is ideal for those who are looking for Christian recovery or who are open to a non-denominational but faith-based program. Pacific Hills is a solid option for those seeking recovery in a safe, comfortable setting in beautiful Southern California.
