Introduction and Basic Services

Opened on Bowen Island, British Columbia in 2002, Orchard Recovery Center offers residential substance abuse treatment and sober living programs. Bowen Island is an hour from Vancouver’s airport and a scenic 20-minute ferry ride from West Vancouver. Co-founder Lorinda Strang became interested in opening a rehab facility because of her own experience with addiction. Orchard Recovery has been a leader in helping establish parliamentary bills and public policy while also bringing modern technology and detox protocols to the recovery industry in Western Canada.

Facility and Meals

The facility used to be a four-star resort and overlooks the area’s mountains and rain forests. It houses a maximum of 33 men and women. Clients have the option of either private or gender-specific double rooms, both airy and bright with large beds. Bathrooms are shared between two to three clients. The common room has a comfortable stone fireplace, and there is a media room as well. In keeping with the Canadian climate, the outdoor pool is open from May to September. There is a serenity circle where clients can practice mindfulness and meditation. Additionally, there is a 2,800 square foot fitness facility on-site. Cell phones and laptops are prohibited, but cigarettes are permitted in designated outdoor areas.

Chefs prepare dietician-approved meals with local ingredients from Orchard’s organic farm. Offerings may include vegetable platters; quesadillas with guacamole, fresh corn slaw and artichoke hearts; mandarin and chickpea salads and fruit salads clad with edible flowers. Breakfast offers fresh coffee and a buffet.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Treatment, which lasts 28 days or longer, begins with a diagnostic assessment and medical evaluation. Clients begin either the detox or the residential treatment plan, including private and group therapy as well as 12-step sessions, trauma therapy, relapse prevention and psycho-spiritual development. On-site detox is integrated into the program and led by physician Dr. Patrick Fay and his medical team. Detox involves structured sleep, monitored hydration and meals, peer support and, if needed, clinical intervention.

Group therapy with six to seven clients lasts for 90 minutes each day. All clients have individual recovery coaches with whom they run through the 12 steps. Individual counseling occurs at least once a week. Treatment methods also include evidence-based therapies like CBT and DBT. The holistic curriculum includes yoga and creative therapies as well as stress-relief morning practices, wellness seminars and nature walks.

Sober living at the Extended Care House is available after completion of 42 days of primary care. Its programming is flexible and may include process groups, meetings with the facility’s physicians and psychiatrist and family therapy. Also included are five days’ worth of educational programming such as stress reduction workshops, 12-step meetings, creative and adventure therapies and aftercare workshops. Those choosing not to go into sober living may attend outpatient programming in West Vancouver twice a week.

If necessary for professional, legal or personal reasons, aftercare may involve an optional monitoring program. Monitoring includes regular check-in appointments, random drug and alcohol tests and monthly mandated reporting to a designated individual. Alumni services are extensive, with regular support meetings, weekly dinners, monthly events, a yearly recovery festival and follow-ups from a 12-step counselor for a year after program completion.

The Orchard Recovery staff includes four MDs, MSWs, ICADCs (one of whom is certified in hypnotism), Master’s-level addiction counselors, a registered nurse and a certified addiction counselor who is in recovery. Also on staff are a dietician, an art therapist, yoga instructors, a Master’s-level local minister and a personal trainer.

Visitation is offered on Sundays from 10:30 am to 4 pm and may take place off-site after the first week of treatment when approved by clinicians.

Bonus Amenities

Treatment includes weekly yoga classes, daily mindfulness meditation, creative therapies like art and music, wellness seminars and nature walks. For an additional fee clients can also participate in fitness training, acupuncture, massage therapy and private yoga sessions.

Family days take place every Saturday at 10 am. Extended family programs are held every six weeks on Friday and Saturday.

With a holistic approach in a beautiful setting, Orchard Recovery Center provides an unparalleled space for recovery for those who are interested in participating in 12-step style recovery with plenty of extras.
