One Out Of Three Vegetarians Eat Meat When Drunk

Most so-called vegetarians craving meat get their fill on the sly.

Your secret’s out, vegetarians! Abstaining from meat may be a piece of (carrot) cake in the sober light of day, but after a few beers, it’s a different story. More than a third of vegetarians admitted to eating meat when they’re drunk, a new survey finds. And most of them—a whopping 69%—try to be sneaky about it, keeping their meat-lapses on the QT.

These juicy stats were revealed by online discount-offering service VoucherCodesPro, who surveyed 1,789 vegetarians in the United Kingdom. They found that the most popular relapse food was kebab, followed by burgers, bacon, fried chicken, and sausages.

Vegetarians who relapse may face moral hangups on top of their hangovers the next day, so the site’s founder, George Charles, urges people to help keep their non-meat eating friends in check during a night out.

"I know a few 'vegetarians' who sometimes crave meat, but it seems that a few are giving into their cravings when drunk," he said. "I think it's important for friends of these 'vegetarians' to support them when drunk and urge them not to eat meat as I'm sure they regret it the next day."

If you think it’s only British vegetarians who are straying from their dietary rules, you’re wrong. A study by the Humane Research Council found that up to 84% of American vegetarians go back to eating meat, more than half of them within the first year.

Nutritionist Lisa Young suggests that slowly weaning off meat is generally more effective than trying to go cold “turkey.” “If you start by eating smaller portions of pork or chicken, then cutting out all meat and dairy for a month, you can get a better feel for it,” she said.

But as far as avoiding kebabs and burgers after you’ve hit the bottle, only the strong will survive.
