Introduction and Basic Services

The Oaks at La Paloma are a set of inpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) in Memphis, Tennessee. Both programs focus on treating clients with dual diagnoses. CEO Jeremy Pitzer is an LCSW with extensive experience in addiction and mental health.

Although it has changed hands and functions over the years, the building in which the Oaks at La Paloma is set has been a healthcare center since 1916, when it was a recovery refuge for those with polio. Foundations Associates, the organization that now operates the rehab, converted the building in 2005.

Facility and Meals

The Oaks at La Paloma’s residence is an impressive two-story brick building with a columnated entrance. There are rolling grassy areas with a fire pit, gazebo and seating, all overlooked by the facility’s wraparound patio and outdoor eating area.

The 70-bed residence has double bedrooms with twin beds and en-suite bathrooms. A large and bright lecture hall sits adjacent to the music-recording studio; an art-making space is down the hall. There are various sports facilities on-site, including a basketball court and full fitness center.

Cell phones and laptops are prohibited while in treatment.

The executive chef provides nutritious meals, which are served buffet-style in the cozy and modern cafeteria.

Foundations Memphis, the IOP, is set in a three-story colonial brick building. Group meeting rooms are spacious but conducive to discussion. Skills group rooms have desks arranged in a circle facing a lectern with controls for visual teaching tools. The dining and snack area has four-seater tables and is connected to the kitchenette.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Medically managed detox is available, lasting anywhere from two to seven days. In addition to counseling with a primary therapist, detoxing clients are encouraged to take part in therapeutic activities. They meet daily with a doctor or NP, and have nurse monitoring and support 24/7.

Many staff members are themselves in recovery and most hold at least a Master’s degree. The team includes NPs, a physician, LCSWs, Master’s-level therapists and LPCs, a Doctorate-level LPC, LMFTs, CRCs and NCCs. There is an eight-to-one client-to-therapist ratio.

Residential treatment lasts 30 to 90 days. Treatment modalities used at The Oaks at La Paloma include EMDR, CBT, CPT, ACT, exposure therapy and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Skills and topics covered include handling triggers, reducing exposure, education on addiction, dealing with underlying mental illnesses, family dynamics and relapse prevention. Twelve-step meetings are offered daily, and alternatives like SMART Recovery and Refuge Recovery are available.

Residents have a minimum of two individual sessions per week with a therapist who also runs their daily process groups, which hold a maximum of eight clients.

The IOP typically lasts eight weeks. Clients can choose to participate either in morning sessions, Monday through Friday from 9 am to noon, or evening sessions, Monday through Thursday from 6 to 9 pm. Programming includes lecture and educational groups as well as group and family therapy. Education and lectures address life skills training, stress management, mental health education and relaxation therapy in addition to the other topics generally covered at the Oaks.

An intensive family weekend takes place monthly, which serves to help the client and their family recognize and resolve dysfunctional patterns and interactions. There is also a weekly Family Lecture Series.

Aftercare may involve ongoing individual counseling, weekly reporting, family support and referral to resources for one year. There is an alumni network that offers events.

Bonus Amenities

The Oaks at La Paloma features a fully stocked music recording studio overseen by a music therapist. There is a gallery on-site, and clients can participate in art therapy.
