Introduction and Basic Services

North Bay Recovery Center is located in San Rafael, California, a city in the San Francisco Bay Area. It provides substance abuse treatment to adult men. The CARF-accredited organization was founded in 2011 and offers residential and outpatient treatment programs. North Bay operates based on what it calls the "S4 Model," which represents a commitment to providing clients a safe, sober, supported and supervised environment.

Facility and Meals

North Bay operates the residential program in three separate houses in a quiet neighborhood near the treatment offices. The facilities are all two-story houses with the bedrooms on the upper level and the common rooms on the ground floor. The houses have a mixture of single and double bedrooms and shared bathrooms. Some rooms are larger and hold two twin beds and the single rooms hold queen size beds. The bedrooms are sparsely but neatly furnished with bedside lamps, ample storage and nice paintings hanging on the wall. There are media rooms with couches, a coffee table and large TVs. The homes also have reading rooms with comfortable lounge chairs.

WiFi is available throughout the residences, which also feature music rooms with instruments that residents can play in their free time. Additionally, there is a backyard for relaxation and board games. Although North Bay doesn’t have on-site fitness rooms, clients can exercise at a nearby local gym.

The meals are prepared and served in house by a professional culinary crew with over 25 years of experience. The meals are a mix of healthy organic foods and the chef works to accommodate residents with unique dietary restrictions or needs.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Individuals begin the treatment process at North Bay with an in-person assessment with one of the organization’s counselors. During this meeting, the counselor and individual discuss history and determine the level of care needed. If the person is deemed a good fit for North Bay, the counselor helps determine an individualized treatment plan.

Although North Bay does not offer detox, counselors can refer clients who are undergoing withdrawal symptoms to local outside detox-providers. North Bay offers a 90-day residential treatment course that consists of evidence-based therapy methods such as DBT, CBT and EDMR. North Bay also focuses on anger management, in-depth trauma care as well as grief and loss. North Bay follows the 12 steps with modifications by the in-house therapists to best fit the needs of the clients. Clients attend regular AA meetings on-site, as well as in the community.

The residential treatment consists of three separate 30-day stages. Stage One involves individualized treatment where the client is assessed and taken through North Bay’s therapeutic handbook. The 12 steps are used heavily in this phase, and clients are required to work through the first four steps and attend daily meetings during this initial 30 days. Stage Two consists of a mixture of both individual and group therapy. The treatment also assesses and identifies any potential triggers and teaches clients relapse prevention strategies. Clients also continue their work with the 12 steps and complete the next four steps during this time. In Stage Three, the client is prepared for re-entry into his community and is taught personal responsibility as well as life skills in time management, scheduling and commitment. Clients complete the final four steps in this stage and before transitioning out of treatment.

A typical day in the residential program begins at 7 am followed by breakfast and medication. Clients then have a big book recovery meeting followed by independent study before lunch. The afternoons consist of process groups, chores and possibly attending the local gym. After dinner, clients attend outside AA meetings and have lights out at 10:30 pm.

Dual diagnosis support and medication management are available if necessary.

The staff of 27 consists of medical, clinical, nutritional and psychiatric professionals including MDs, RNs, MFTs, LCSWs, LMFTs, CADCs, LACs, an acupuncturist and a culinary team of three highly trained chefs.

For clients who complete the residential program, North Bay offers an optional aftercare treatment programthat consists of both group and individual therapy, and the length and intensity is based on the needs of the client.

Bonus Amenities

The organization also offers holistic treatment options such as art therapy, spiritual coaching, acupuncture and off-site equine therapy.
