Introduction and Basic Services
Just south of Salt Lake City is the quiet suburb of Cottonwood Heights, Utah. New Roads Behavioral Health sprawls across three separate properties in the sleepy town, offering 18 to 28-year-old men and women the specialized treatment they need. Residents are divided into three groups: PATH, which stands for Pathways to Healing, is a dual diagnosis program for young men; WORTH, which stands for Woman’s Road to Health, focuses on dialectical behavioral therapy to help young female clients recover; and NORTH is New Roads to Healing–an apartment complex and program designed for the next step in re-integrating back into the world. A strong emphasis on outpatient and aftercare support also helps clients long after they leave the property full time.

Facility and Meals
Residences are cozy, homey and unassuming. The roads of Cottonwood Heights are lined with trimmed trees and shrubbery, and bridges cross quiet streams running through the neighborhoods. With only 70 beds between the three locations, a stay at New Roads Behavioral Health is intimate and personalized for every resident. Each client has the chance to have their name immortalized on the brick path of success found on each property, full of the names of previous residents. Most rooms are shared on property with a roommate to encourage camaraderie and an on-site chef prepares meals for residents, taking any dietary restrictions to heart.
Treatment Protocol and Team
New Roads Behavioral Health specializes in CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) with the 12 steps and psychiatric oversight. Residents typically average 90 days. Group, individual and family therapy sessions are part of the program, as well as random drug testing and medication management when needed. New Roads Behavioral Health offers only heroin detox and specialized co-occurring disorder treatment.
A doctor is on call 24/7 in addition to the rest of the 29 person staff, who maintain an almost one-to-one ratio depending on how many residents there are at any given time. Credentials among staff range from MSW, LCSW, MBA and CSW to CMHC, ACMHC and LSUDC therapists. An aftercare program is available to clients upon initial completion.

A stay at New Roads Behavioral Health includes three recreational sessions a week, and the facilities are dotted with basketball and volleyball courts as well as billiard, ping-pong and foosball tables. Access to books, TV and video games entice indoor residents and there are open faces for jogging, skateboarding, bike riding and walks through Cottonwood Heights.
Summary
New Roads Behavioral Health has a lot to offer to young men and women who are ready and willing to begin the path to recovery. Through the PATH, WORTH and NORTH programs, New Roads Behavioral Health has plenty of individualized plans and a well rounded mix of evidence-based, 12-step and holistic offerings.
