Introduction and Basic Services

Monarch Shores was founded in 2005 in Dana Point, California, a small coastal city in Orange County, just north of San Diego. The organization provides detox and residential treatment to adult men and women. It’s a well-respected member of the illustrious Southern California recovery community.

Facility and Meals

Monarch Shores’ residential program is located seaside in the Dana Point area and operated out of six separate houses. Each residence comes with a mixture of private and shared bedrooms and bathrooms and services no more than six clients at a time.

The bedrooms are filled with large beds and fresh linens, flat screen TVs, personal toiletries and large closet spaces. The houses features ceiling-to-floor windows that allow in plenty of sunlight. They also come equipped with comfortable living rooms furnished with large plush couches, flat screen TVs and pool tables.

The houses feature stunning ocean views and are surrounded by lush green gardens. Each facility has large patio and pool that residents can enjoy with the naturally sunny California weather.

Laptops and cellphones are permitted, and there are also on-site computers, scanners and fax machines.

Monarch has an on-site team of chefs who prepare three meals a day, catered to needs of clients. The chef prepares healthy meals that are made to accommodate any individual dietary restrictions or needs. The houses also have modern kitchens with new appliances.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Monarch Shore’s intake process begins with a comprehensive assessment with a counselor and doctor. If the client is deemed a good fit for Monarch Shores, the counselor and doctor create a highly individualized treatment plan that addresses the client’s individual needs.

If clients are undergoing any sort of withdrawal symptoms, they are referred to Monarch Shores’ medically monitored detox program. During the detox program, the organization’s nurses and medical staff monitor clients closely to ensure they are receiving the correct medication and therapy.

Monarch Shores’ treatment program usually lasts for 90 days, but can be shorter or longer based on the needs of the client. The treatment consists of both group and individual therapy, with clients participating in 15 hours of individual treatment per week.

In therapy, counselors use a variety of therapy protocols including CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), psychoeducation and guided imagery. Monarch Shores also focuses on anger management, identifying triggers, coping skills and communication skills. Clients are also taught fitness information and nutritional training.

A typical day begins at 6:30 am, followed by breakfast and groups until lunch at 12:15 pm. After lunch, clients have more groups and meetings in the afternoon and dinner at 5:15 pm. In the evenings, clients attend either a 12-step group, an alumni meeting or have time to go to the gym. Monarch Shores has lights out at 11pm on weeknights and 12 am on Friday and Saturday.

When clients finish the residential program, they have the option of enrolling in Monarch Shores’ Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Similar to the residential program, the IOP consists of both group and individual therapy. Although most clients attend three to five times a week, the exact length and intensity of the IOP is based on the needs and schedule of the client.

Monarch Shores utilizes the 12 steps in both group and individual meetings. Clients also attend weekly AA and NA meetings at the facility. Clients who are not interested in AA or NA have the option of attending local SMART Recovery meetings.

The organization is dual diagnosis and offers treatment for clients with co-occurring disorders that includes targeted group and individual therapy, psychiatric medication management, education and information on relapse prevention.

Monarch Shores offers individual meetings with the counselor, client and their family members. However, these meetings are only offered based on the consent of the client. These meetings aim to address family issues that lead to the client’s substance abuse and establish healthy communication practices.

Aftercare is offered in the form of discharge planning and regular check-ins with counselors.

Monarch Shores operates a three-to-one staff-to-client ratio. The staff includes therapists, case managers, nurses, a doctor, a psychiatrist, a yoga instructor, an acupuncturist, a spiritual advisor and licensed clinicians who mostly have Master’s-level credentials.

Bonus Amenities

Monarch Shores utilizes a number of holistic treatment options including massage therapy, yoga, acupuncture and equine therapy.

Monday through Friday, the organization provides transportation and access to a local 24 Hour Fitness Super-Sport. Personal training and nutrition plans are offered through the 24 Hour Fitness.
