Introduction and Basic Services

A Mission for Michael was established in 2007 to provide comprehensive residential treatment for adddiction and co-occurring disorders in the community of Dana Point, California. Originally, the facility was exclusively for men, however it recently started to also treat women, who reside in off-site sober living facilities and attend an outpatient program during the day in the nearby city of San Clemente. It’s one of many well-reputed members of the Southern California recovery community.

Facilities and Meals

A Mission for Michael has three transitional housing units that can accommodate up to six in double occupancy bedrooms. The beautiful, comfortable homes offer style and comfort, with beach views and plenty of space throughout. Each facility has two living rooms, big screen TVs, new appliances and state of the art eat-in kitchens. There are also game rooms and terraces for clients to use, and more than enough storage and closet space for everyone.

Each home comes with an on-site chef, who prepares three meals per day that provide optimal nutrition while being delicious.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Treatment at A Mission for Michael is exclusively for those requiring dual diagnosis support, and offers a variety of methods to help clients stabilize through highly structured treatment. Care relies on evidence-based approaches and individualized programs. Both 45 and 90 day programs are offered and clients have weekly meetings with a staff psychiatrists, weekly individual sessions with a Master’s-level CADC, and several group sessions per day.

The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), the first stage in the outpatient programs, is a five day a week program that lasts for six hours per day. The step down is the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which lessens in intensity to three days a week for three hours at a time.

In either case, clients have regular medication management and psychoeducation. Groups focus on identifying triggers, relapse prevention, knowing healthy boundaries and learning new coping mechanisms. Additionally, clients struggling with alcohol and opioid dependence can receive injections of Vivitrol.

Therapeutic modalities include CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), DBT, Stages of Change Model and engagement in the 12 steps. Clients work on past traumas and coping with mental illness. They also participate in holistic treatments like art and music therapy.

There is a weekly family program of therapy and education that takes place on Saturdays.

During the last three weeks or so of treatment, client begin to design an aftercare plan. Aftercare is offered at A Mission for Michael through weekly group therapy.

There is a highly experienced and caring staff at A Mission for Michael that includes a physician, CATCs, psychologists, LADCs, LMFTs, RNs and a yoga instructor.
