Introduction and Basic Services

Derik Brian founded Miramar in beautiful Laguna Beach, California to offer comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services for addiction and co-occurring disorders. Clients receive personalized treatment in an intimate setting that includes individual and group therapy, spiritual guidance and detox, if necessary. The male and female clients reside in separate facilities that are private, safe and comfortable.

Facility and Meals

There are three residences, all of which can hold a maximum of six clients each. For the most part the bedrooms are shared with one other person, though at times a private room is a possibility. The bedrooms do have private bathrooms however. The facilities are all home based with coastal views, several balconies, fireplaces and living rooms with mounted flat screen TVs. Shared common spaces also include a courtyard, gazebo and outdoor dining table. Clients live off campus and are taken to treatment at the clinic daily.

Gourmet chefs make every meal for clients during residential treatment and are able to accommodate dietary preferences and requests.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Miramar uses an individualized approach to all clients and offers a very high staff-to-client ratio. Men and women have gender-specific treatment tracks in order to completely focus on themselves. Medically monitored detox is offered and overseen by physicians. Residential treatment includes a full psychiatric evaluation for co-occurring disorders, and medication management can be facilitated.

There are two to three individual sessions per week and at least two group sessions daily. Miramar is mainly a therapeutic environment that doesn’t necessarily utilize the 12 steps, but there is a Higher Power element to treatment. Clients are given written assignments during treatment and are expected to journal daily.

Aftercare planning happens throughout the course of treatment and for some includes taking part in Miramar’s outpatient program. Depending on the level of treatment needed after leaving inpatient, programming is offered six days a week, Monday through Saturday, for up to six hours. Outpatient picks up where residential left off, but does have more of a 12-step aspect to it. There are also sober living options in this case.

A weekly family counseling program is available at the facility if applicable in person, or over the phone.

There is a fairly large staff at Miramar of psychologists, RNs, CADCs, MFTs, dieticians, acupuncturists and spiritual guidance counselors. Additionally this facility has medical doctors that rotate in and out to work with their clients.

Bonus Amenities

Holistic healing methods like acupuncture, massage therapy, yoga and meditation are regular activities. There are also beach days, go-kart racing, hiking, swimming and more offered on a weekly basis. In addition, clients are permitted to have their cell phones and computers while in treatment in order to maintain their work or school schedules.

Summary

Clients at Miramar are subject to a variety of treatment methods and receive more freedom than a majority of others do while in different programs. Treatment is based on spiritual values and finding joy in recovery, and it doesn't hurt that the clients live in beautiful beach homes in the process. Miramar is another valued pillar of the Southern California recovery community.
