Actress Melanie Griffith says that her battle with addiction didn’t affect the way she parented her three children.

"I was a totally functioning mom," she said in a recent issue of Porter magazine. "I wasn’t like a drunk-on-the-floor, out-of-it person. I didn’t do some things I probably should have done but, mostly, I was there for my kids. They had a sort of privileged gypsy life.”

Griffith is the mom of Alexander Bauer, 31, Stella Banderas, 20, and Fifty Shades of Grey actress Dakota Johnson, 27.

Griffith says that she first went to rehab in 1988, when her son Alexander was three years old. That helped Griffith rekindle her relationship with Don Johnson, whom she had divorced. The couple ended up remarrying.

“Don was actually waiting for me when I got out of rehab,” she said. “We got back together; it was the most natural, perfect, loving thing. Then it just sort of wasn’t working. I think it’s hard when you are both in the public eye, unless one of you gives up work.”

Griffith has said that she won’t watch her daughter’s performance in Fifty Shades of Grey because of the movie’s sexual nature, but despite that Dakota Johnson says that she paid a special tribute to her mom in Fifty Shades Darker

"There is a moment, a little surprise moment especially for my mom in this movie," the 27-year-old actress said earlier this year, according to ET. "She won't ever see it! Maybe she'll see this one specific little clip."

Griffith has battled addiction in the public eye for the good portion of her Hollywood career. In 1998, she entered rehab for a prescription medication addiction. The actress revealed that she became hooked on an unspecified prescription medication. In a statement to People, she said, “My doctor has referred me to the Daniel Freeman Hospital to step down from the prescribed medication that I have been taking for a neck injury.”

In 2009, her rep confirmed to People that Griffith had checked back into rehab, telling the magazine that “[Griffith] is there to reinforce her commitment to stay healthy. This is part of a routine plan that was designed between her and her doctors years ago.”
