McLean Hospital has two residential addiction treatment programs in Princeton, Massachusetts and Camden, Maine. Both facilities treat clients with substance use disorders, and are well-equipped to treat individuals with co-occurring disorders.

Facility and Meals

The recovery program in Princeton, Massachusetts, Fernside is located an hour west of Belmont. The luxury facility lies in a beautiful rolling valley, and provides world-class accommodations designed to keep the clients engaged in their recovery. Residents stay in an elegant 19th century estate that once served as a bed and breakfast. To this end, clients receive comfort, privacy and top of the line amenities. With only eight individuals at Fernside at a time, each client enjoys a private bedroom equipped with a queen-sized bed and private bathroom. Clients can enjoy the surrounding beauty while relaxing in the gazebo or hammock.

The facility boasts amazing cuisine prepared by the culinary team and served in extravagant dining rooms. The top of the line menu is designed by nutritionists and is both healthy and delicious. Breakfasts are mostly continental, with one hot breakfast prepared by the chef weekly.

Treatment Protocol and Team

McLean offers a “Signature Recovery Program” at Fernside that provides comprehensive, individualized treatment for alcohol and drug addiction. The 30-day inpatient program integrates evidence-based treatments with 12-step and holistic methods. The facility does not offer detox on-site but at the main hospital in Belmont. However, the staff can provide ongoing Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) with Suboxone if necessary.

Fernside provides classic treatments like CBT, DBT, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), along with wellness activities like yoga, nutrition classes, health education and personal exercise regimens. Residents see a personal therapist three times a week, and have the option of up to five scheduled visits with the on-site psychologist. While therapy sessions are held in the house, transportation to off-site 12-step meetings in the evenings is available. The facility values family involvement in every client’s recovery and offers education for family members seeking ways to support the client. In addition, Fernside faculty works with clients to create a continued support plan for “post-discharge” treatment. Using connections with local outpatient providers, the client receives an individualized aftercare plan.

With only eight residents at a time and 24/7 supervision, clients receive a lot of personal attention. Treatment is provided under the supervision of clinicians affiliated with Harvard Medical School, including psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses and counselors.

Bonus Amenities

Fernside utilizes wellness activities and expressive therapies during treatment, including art and music therapy and smoking cessation. Staying physically active is a vital component to recovery, and clients regularly enjoy the on-site gym. Residents take occasional recreational trips to Boston as well as off-site movie-nights.

Perhaps the most unique feature is the prorated refund that is made available for those clients that have to leave before the end of treatment. In addition, Fernside provides a strategy for returning clients who are concered about relapse.
