Introduction and Basic Services

McLean Borden Cottage is a luxury treatment facility located in Camden, Maine, approximately three hours north of Boston in the MidCoast region of the state. Like its sister facility Fernside in Princeton, Massachusetts, Borden Cottage is affiliated with the renowned McLean Hospital. The McLean Hospital is the largest psychiatric affiliate of Harvard Medical School and was recently named “America’s Number One Psychiatric Hospital” by U.S. News & World Report. Through its connection with McLean, clients at Borden Cottage have access to medical and psychiatric care that ranks as some of the best in the world, including the facility’s Harvard Medical School-affiliated clinicians that specialize in substance abuse disorders as well as dual diagnosis treatment.

Facility and Meals

Residents of Borden Cottage stay in a luxury 16,000 square foot hilltop mansion situated on 14 acres of beautiful Maine coastline. Opened in 2014, the facility offers panoramic ocean views and a number of high tech amenities. There are only eight clients at any given time, and every resident stays in their own private bedroom, all furnished with a queen-size bed, private bathroom and a view of Penobscot Bay. In addition to the classic beauty and solitude granted to the clients, the cottage also boasts features like a built-in bowling alley, movie theater and recording studio.

Clients enjoy amazing cuisine as every meal is prepared by professional chefs from the local Relais & Châteaux Hotel. There is a focus on all meals being healthy and delicious.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Borden Cottage offers a 30-day individualized program that utilizes evidence-based therapies rooted in clinical and neuroscience research, along with holistic methods. This is to ensure that the client’s physical, mental and spiritual dynamics are all addressed. By tailoring treatment plans to fit specific needs, Borden Cottage helps individuals focus not just on their addiction, but on co-occurring psychiatric diagnoses as well.

Classic treatments like CBT, DBT, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) as well as medication management are all performed by specialists affiliated with the Harvard Medical School. While therapy sessions are held on-site, transportation to off-site 12-step meetings in the evening is available.

Borden Cottage values family involvement in a client’s recovery. To this end, the facility offers education for family members seeking ways to support the client. Visitors are welcome in the late afternoon and evening Mondays through Fridays as well as on weekends in consultation with the treatment counselors. In addition, the Borden Cottage staff works with clients to create a detailed aftercare plan to ensure continued support.

With only eight residents at a time and around-the-clock care by an average of 30 staff members, there is no shortage of personal attention. Harvard Medical School-affiliated addiction recovery specialists and mental health therapists are on-site 24/7 along with psychologists, psychiatric nurses and psychiatrists.

Bonus Amenities

Mind and body recovery are vital components of the Borden Cottage treatment experience. The facility offers yoga, a tailored physical fitness regimen and nutrition education. In addition, Borden Cottage is a tobacco-free campus. The program provides nicotine replacement therapy, smoking cessation as well as art therapy and music therapy.

The Borden Cottage estate offers many amenities, perhaps none more impressive than the state of the art movie theater equipped with reclining seats and surround sound. Also available on the grounds is a bowling alley, billiards room, an arcade and a nostalgic 1950s inspired diner. A business center with WiFi is also accessible to residents. Clients are encouraged to use the music studio on campus and can always enjoy the heated pool. A concierge for family visitors is also available.

Summary

The McLean Borden Cottage facility offers clients tailored comprehensive treatment, a discreet environment and the accommodations of a four-star hotel. The facility’s affiliation with McLean Hospital guarantees clients access to the best possible medical care. For individuals seeking individualized, high-end care, Borden Cottage is a great option.
