Macaulay Culkin has addressed the persistent rumors of his struggle with heroin addiction, though he doesn’t exactly deny them. In an interview with The Guardian, the 35-year-old actor criticized the media for disingenuous claims of “concern” for his health and well-being, and said they did “not necessarily” have any reason to worry.

Given the tabloids' history of tracking his suspected substance abuse, Culkin says people were "not necessarily" right to be worried. "Of course, when silly stuff is going on—but no, I was not pounding six grand of heroin every month or whatever,” he said. “The thing that bugged me was tabloids wrapping it all in this weird guise of concern. No, you’re trying to shift papers."

By “silly stuff,” the actor may be referring to his 2004 arrest for possession of marijuana, Xanax and clonazepam. In 2012, tabloids reported that he was struggling with addiction to heroin and opioid painkillers after his breakup with ex-girlfriend Mila Kunis and “could be dead within six months.” But his rep at the time vehemently denied these claims, describing them as “categorically without merit” and “impossibly and ridiculously fictitious."

Sources “close” to Culkin claimed he had relapsed on heroin and oxycodone and was in a “downward spiral.” His gaunt, even haggard, appearance at the time did little to dissuade these rumors. In 2013, it was reported that the actor was drug-free and doing—and looking—much better, thanks to his girlfriend at the time who, according to a source, threatened to leave him if he started using again.

But all of these reports have been based on “sources” and the actor has yet to address his rumored addiction issues directly, with this Guardian interview only scratching the surface. (It's his biggest in 10 years.) However, that could change. When asked if he would consider telling the whole story one day, he answered, “Perhaps.”

Culkin is perhaps best known for his starring role in the Home Alone movies of the ‘90s, but has largely stayed out of the limelight since then. However, he said he doesn’t regret his run as a child star: “It’s allowed me to become the person I am, and I like me, so I wouldn’t change a thing.”
