Over the weekend, British tabloids published photos of Jonathan Rhys Meyers at an airport, appearing to be intoxicated and unable to board his flight. In response, the actor’s wife, Mara Lane, took to Instagram to reveal that she recently suffered a miscarriage, which may have been the catalyst for Meyers’s relapse.

The Irish actor, best known for his role as Henry VIII on the BBC and Showtime series, The Tudors, has publicly struggled with alcohol addiction for many years. Lane’s Instagram post read, “With much sadness, we open our hearts to share that J and I lost our second child, who was baking in the oven. Child was very very much wanted (right now especially by J, so he took the news particularly not so well) and we are still working with coping skills over here.”

She continued, “My husband is an Irishman who battles alcoholism and depression and drank between jobs to try to cope with the sadness of this news.” She said alcoholism was something “he was born with.” Meyers has spent several stays in rehab, most notably while filming The Tudors. He reportedly had to be hospitalized and, after discharge, required a sober companion on set so he could complete filming, checking into rehab at the end of the season, according to the New York Daily News.

In 2013, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that part of the actor’s salary for the television series Dracula was withheld until filming was completed, amid concerns about Meyers’s drinking. The Golden Globe winner has been arrested in the past for drunken brawls and disorderly conduct.

A witness at the airport told the Mirror, “He was staggering around for a good while. He wasn’t causing any hassle with anyone, he just seemed to be really intoxicated.” The witness also described him as “completely out of it.”

Lane noted that the person who snapped the photos of her husband at his low point was “slightly in the wrong,” but says they “forgive” them. She said she's still adjusting to being in the public eye and living as a public persona.

In her Instagram post, a photo of a young girl crouching by a lion, Lane also said that Meyers is currently receiving help: “He is safe and with his sober living companion and bodyguard to get into a detox closer to home since he was denied hospital help twice in Ireland because of an already two month wait period.”
