Hillary Clinton's Brother-In-Law Arrested On Drunk-Driving Suspicion

Within a few days of Hillary Clinton clinching the Democratic nomination, her brother-in-law was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

Roger Clinton was arrested Sunday night in Redondo Beach, California, the Los Angeles Times reported. He was initially followed by Redondo Beach Police after a motorist called in and reported that he was driving in “an erratic manner” and was possibly drunk. Police said in a statement that three other people were in the car with him. When they eventually pulled him over, Clinton failed a series of field sobriety tests.

But when he was brought to the police station, RBPD Lt. Joe Hoffman said that Clinton “was explained the law and chose not to provide chemical testing” to determine his blood alcohol content. Consequently, his license was automatically suspended for a full year as prescribed by a 1990 law that was passed to help discourage drunk driving. According to the Times, Clinton has 10 days to appeal the one-year suspension. He was released Monday morning on $15,000 bond.

Clinton, who is Bill's half-brother, was also arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in 2001 in nearby Hermosa Beach, but pleaded guilty that time to a misdemeanor charge of reckless driving. He also had a cocaine distribution charge from 1985 after selling the drug to an undercover police officer, spending over a year in prison as a result. However, Bill pardoned him of the charge shortly before leaving office.

CBS News noted that Roger's alcoholic father, Bill's stepfather, had been abusive to them and their mother, Virginia, according to Roger's 1995 memoir Growing Up Clinton. Bill, who is 10 years older than Roger, took on the role of protective father figure for Roger. According to CNN, Roger admitted to kicking his father's gravestone: "I'd kick his headstone. I'd say, 'This is what I couldn't do. How dare you leave before I could face you?'"

One of Hillary’s biggest financial supporters also got in trouble with the law (multiple times) over drunk driving. Walmart heiress Alice Walton—who has over $32 billion in assets and donated over $350,000 to Hillary’s “Victory Fund” last year—was arrested for DUI in 2011. She had also been arrested for DUI in 1998, when she slammed into a gas meter and infamously told the arresting officer, “I’m Alice Walton, bitch!” However, she only paid a fine of $925 and didn’t serve jail time in the case.
