Introduction and Basic Services

Located in the Portland metropolitan area, Hazelden Springbrook is one of the treatment locations in the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation network. Situated in Newberg, Oregon, home of George Fox University, the facility provides treatment for clients struggling with substance use disorders and those in need of dual diagnosis support. The facility believes in treating “the whole person,” focusing on the recovery of the mind, body and spirit. A comprehensive curriculum is offered that includes detox, residential treatment, outpatient care and sober living. There are specialized programs for adolescents, women-only, professionals and members of the LGBTQ community.

Facility and Meals

Residents at Springbrook stay in a modern, expansive building that looks like a nice hotel. The facility is equipped with a spacious floor plan, large common rooms with vaulted ceilings and lots of large windows allowing plenty of natural light. With 50 beds, Springbrook provides a communal atmosphere. Each client shares a bedroom with two others, and all rooms have an attached bathroom as well as basic furnishings like twin-sized beds, dressers and desks. There is a laundry on campus and clients are allowed to smoke in specific outdoor areas. To better enable clients to focus on their recovery, Springbrook does not permit cell phones, revealing clothing or any wearable technology. However, residents are allowed to use facility phones.

Clients eat three meals a day in the facility’s cafeteria, all prepared by the on-site culinary team. The chefs work with nutritionist to create a menu that is healthy and well-balanced.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Upon intake, clients undergo a residential evaluation to provide a more in-depth look at any co-occurring disorders, and to help the staff develop the most effective treatment plan. If necessary, clients go into the detox program. Springbrook provides a medically-supervised detox for new clients that typically lasts about two days. Throughout detox, residents receive around-the-clock monitoring. After completing detox, clients typically transition into the residential phase. Lengths of stay in this part of treatment tend to vary depending on the specific needs of the client. Residents advance through the program at their own pace.

Residents are kept busy at Springbrook. A typical day includes exercise, lectures, wellness education, group sessions and evening 12-step meetings. While the 12-step method is the cornerstone of treatment, clients also engage in CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR to treat past trauma. Clients typically have weekly individual sessions with their physicians and psychiatrists.

Springbrook provides individualized outpatient programs for continued support following discharge from the residential program. Treatment models mirror that of the residential phase, in that it is abstinence-based and focuses on the 12-step philosophy. In addition, there are many affiliated sober living locations available, for those clients needing support transitioning back into regular life.

The multidisciplinary team at Springbrook is highly qualified, with many Master’s-level clinicians and some PhDs. There are psychiatrists, psychologists, nutritionists, case managers, recovery coaches, specialized addiction counselors, a nursing staff and therapists.

Bonus Amenities

Springbrooks provides a vast array of specialized treatment programs tailored to suit the specific needs of healthcare professionals, legal professionals, those who identify as LGBTQ, adolescents and the geriatric population.

Clients enjoy substantial visiting time, with family and friends allowed to come between 1 and 5 pm on weekends.
