Introduction and Basic Services

Located 65 miles northwest of Denver in Estes Park, Colorado, Harmony Foundation

is a residential treatment facility that specializes in the care of clients struggling with substance abuse as well as those in need of dual diagnosis support. Originally founded in 1969 by a group of local men in order to help individuals with alcoholism, this CARF-Accredited facility added detox in 2008. Today, Harmony provides treatment for up to 650 men and women each year utilizing the bio-psycho-social model of healing the body, mind and spirit, as well as evidence-based techniques.

Facility and Meals

In 1969, the original founders pooled their resources to purchase 42 acres of land in the Rocky Mountains, known as “Harmony Ranch.” The mountain environment offers an atmosphere of beauty, serenity, renewal and provides clients with the perfect atmosphere for recovery for up to 74 clients. Residents stay in double-occupancy, gender-specific cabins equipped with queen-sized beds, closet space and views of the beautiful natural surroundings. Harmony offers a peer-driven program as well as a return to nature. To this end, clients are not allowed electronic devices and there are no TVs. Clients are allowed to use public phones after they have been on campus for several days. Smoking in certain areas is permitted, though clients are not be able to buy cigarettes while on campus.

Residents enjoy the fine dining that has been a cornerstone of the program since its inception. Male and female clients eat in separate dining halls. The culinary team works with an on-site dietician to prepare well-balanced meals and snacks. Client’s dietary preferences and restrictions can be accommodated.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Clients entering the program undergo a comprehensive assessment. If deemed necessary, clients go into the on-site detox program that typically lasts between five and seven days, depending on the individual. Around-the-clock medical supervision is provided and buprenorphine is used for those in opioid withdrawal. After completing detox, clients transition into the 30-day residential program.

Residential treatment provides gender-specific programming with individualized plans that utilize the biopsychosocial model to address the whole person. While most of the programming at Harmony is provided in group settings, clients participate in weekly individual sessions with their primary therapists and case managers. Clients spend most of their mornings in group therapy, with afternoons set aside for educational classes like peer evaluations and recovery classes. Holistic therapies like yoga and acupuncture are also generally scheduled in the afternoon. In addition, on-site 12-step meetings are scheduled throughout the day.

Harmony’s three-month continuing care protocol includes an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Full-time addiction counselors introduce relapse prevention, wellness and nutrition classes as well as sober activities. Harmony offers a specialized young adult track for clients between 18 and 23. Also, a “Re-Commitment to Recovery” program is available for clients that have relapsed within the first year of completing the 30-day program. Harmony also boasts a strong alumni program. In addition, there is an intensive three-day family program.

The Harmony team is comprised of Master’s-level therapists, case managers, LADCs and a nursing team. A psychiatrist is available to provide medication management for clients with co-occurring disorders.

Bonus Amenities

Exercise is a significant aspect of treatment at Harmony. To this end, residents use the on-site exercise facility and regularly go on outings into Rocky Mountain National Park.

Harmony Foundation offers a well-rounded, gender-specific treatment program that is individualized and focused on healing the mind, body and spirit.
