Introduction and Basic Services

David Kniffen Sr. and David Kniffen Jr. opened Enterhealth Ranch in the fall of 2008 after their close friends lost their children to alcohol addiction. The organization offers residential and outpatient treatment through a facility in Van Alstyne, Texas and one additional location in Dallas.

Facility and Meals

Located on a 43-acre former ranch north of Dallas in Van Alstyne, the residential facility has 36 private bedrooms. Each bedroom is furnished with a queen-sized bed, night table, closet and cozy armchair. The house has business and media room with a TV. Enterhealth also has a maid service that makes sure the house is clean and tidy at all times.

The house has an on-site fitness center with treadmills and workout machines as well as an outdoor pool and basketball and tennis court. Each client is assigned an individualized fitness and workout plan to help him or her stay healthy while in treatment. The house also has a full service salon.

Outside, the house also has a putting green, horseshoes, basketball court, tennis court and a number of walking and running trails.

The organization has an on-site chef who prepares three meals a day for clients. The chef aims to make healthy meals for clients that accommodate any client dietary restrictions or needs. A usual meal includes a meat or fish with a vegetable fruit, salad and desert. Clients are allowed caffeine and sugar in moderation.

Clients are given cell phone and laptop access based on their treatment progress.

Treatment Protocol and Team

If clients are unstable or undergoing withdrawal symptoms, Enterhealth refers them to the organization’s supervised medical detox program. Enterhealth has a doctor, nurse and clinical team on staff that provides 24/7 support to clients in the detox program.

When clients enter treatment, they undergo an in-depth medical and psychological assessment that includes psychiatric diagnosis evaluation, neurocognitive testing and a baseline medical exam. Counselors develop an individualized treatment plan for each client that consists usually 50 hours of therapy a week. The organization utilizes group, individual and family therapy.

Enterhealth is dual diagnosis and has a full medical team that assists clients with co-occurring disorders that included doctors, nurses and psychiatrists. It operates a three-to-one therapist-to-client ratio with its counselors consisting of both LCDCs and LCSWs.

The residential program usually lasts for 45 days but can be shorter or longer based on their treatment needs. Enterhealth utilizes a variety of treatment methods including CBT, EDMR, Motivational Interviewing (MI), relapse prevention, brief interventions, behavioral marital therapy, adjunctive pharmacotherapy and community reinforcement and contingency management. Clients participate in individual therapy twice a week for 45 minutes to an hour at a time.

A typical day at Enterhealth starts at 7:30 am followed by medication and breakfast. The morning then consists of physical exercise and group meetings. After lunch, clients are in group sessions until dinner at 5:30 pm. In the evenings, clients can relax, exercise and hang out until lights out at 10:30 pm.

The organization also offers outpatient treatment through an office in the Park Cities area of Dallas. Enterhealth offers both an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and less intense Supportive Outpatient Program (SOP). The IOP meets three nights a week for eight consecutive weeks at a time, and the SOP operates the same as the IOP, but with a less intense schedule.

The outpatient treatment consists of both group and individual therapy. In the therapy, Enterhealth aims to pair clients with other participants who are the same gender, age and come from a similar socio-economic background. Enterhealth offers a weekly woman’s group, men’s group, co-ed group, LBGT group and family member support group. Clients may also be drug tested or breathalyzed in this program to help ensure sobriety.

Enterhealth doesn’t utilize the 12 steps in treatment but does refer interested clients to outside AA and NA meetings.

The organization also offers family therapy that consists of group, individual and couples therapy. Enterhealth also offers educational support for family members. Enterhealth places a great deal of focus on healing family members along side clients and most family members attend on average five hours of treatment a week.

Although Enterhealth does not have a structured aftercare program, counselors do assists clients with finding sober living. The organization also has regular alumni meetings in the Dallas area.
