Introduction and Basic Services

In 2007, Joe McKinsey, a successful New York businessman, saw a need for a high-end, private residential treatment option in the New York Metropolitan area. His efforts resulted in luxury facility, The Dunes of East Hamptons. The organization is accredited by the State of New York’s Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) and provides comprehensive care to adult men and women in a beautiful beachside location.

Facility and Meals

The Dunes services nine residents at a time and each client has his or her own private bedroom and bathroom. The bedrooms feature queen or king-sized beds, luxurious linens, bedside tables and overstuffed chairs or couches. The rooms are cleaned everyday by a housekeeping staff. The bathrooms are large and filled with high-end toiletries, steam baths and occasionally fireplaces.

Privacy is a chief concern at The Dunes. The house is located on a private, gated estate in a secluded area that is not visible from any public area. In order to help maintain client anonymity, computers, cell phones and cameras are not allowed. However, The Dunes does have a house phone that clients are allowed to use.

The house also has a multiple common areas with couches, chairs and fireplaces. The backyard features several Jacuzzis, a beautiful pool and a tennis court.

The Dunes has an on-site professional chef that prepares three gourmet meals a day. Many of the items on the menu are prepared with locally sourced foods including fresh seafood as well as eggs and produce from a nearby farm. The meals are often served with multiple courses and the chef works with a nutritionist and dietician to accommodate any specific dietary restrictions or needs.

Clients also regularly enjoy yoga, nature walks, meditation and massages.

Treatment Protocol and Team

When clients enter treatment at The Dunes, they undergo a psychological and medical pre-admission evaluation to help determine whether the facility can effectively address their needs. If the client is deemed a good fit, the staff designs a highly individualized treatment plan. Clients who are unstable or going through withdrawal, are referred to outside detox facilities.

The length of the treatment is based on the needs of the client, and clients are able to stay as long as needed. The Dunes offers both group and individual therapy and uses a variety of treatment techniques including CBT, DBT, EDMR and trauma-informed care. The counselors facilitate a multitude of groups including a mindfulness group, relapse prevention, timeline groups, internal family system and a wrap-up group. Counselors also use “behavior-focused protocols” to replace each client’s negative internal dialogues with positive ones.

For those who might not be able to commit to inpatient care, the organization has an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) based on the Syndrome Model of Addiction that focuses on addressing past traumas that lead to addiction. The length and intensity of the IOP is individually tailored to meet the needs of the client.

For high-profile professionals, The Dunes offers an executive residential program. Clients in this program have access to email, phone, Skype and fax to help stay connected with their business while still in treatment. The Dunes can also help make arrangements for any important meetings or functions the client may have to attend.

The Dunes provides comprehensive aftercare planning and resources including an online aftercare program, alumni breakfasts on Saturdays and referral to outside outpatient programs. Counselors are also able to travel anywhere within a 150 mile radius to meet former clients in need.

The facility is dual diagnosis and refers clients with potential co-occurring disorders to its medical staff.

The Dunes utilizes the 12 steps and clients are regularly transported to and from local AA and NA meetings.

The organization operates a three-to-one staff-to-client ratio. The treatment team includes LMSWs, CASACs, two PhD-level addiction experts, a medical director, a licensed nutritionist and a dietician.

Bonus Amenities

The Dunes emphasizes the importance of spiritual health, and fosters this through the skills of a Reiki master practitioner as well as an Asian bodywork therapy specialist. Residents can also anticipate plenty of spiritual counseling, energy medicine, acupuncture, writing workshops, yoga, Shiatsu, meditation and guided nature walks. Experiential therapies such as art, music and equine therapy are also an extensive part of the programming.

Clients enjoy group outings including visiting art museums, biking, sailing and hiking.

The Dunes has its own legal team that can provide legal assistance and case management for any clients with potential legal needs as well as DWI assessments.

There are also intervention services, pharmacotherapy and family therapy. If needed, The Dunes offers a sober living home for clients participating in the IOP.

Summary

The Dunes of East Hampton provides highly individualized residential treatment with luxurious accommodations. The focus on privacy, impressive range of holistic and alternative treatment methods and attention to clients’ spiritual progress all make for an extremely well-rounded rehab experience. Also, aftercare support allows clients to leave treatment with confidence knowing that The Dunes will continue to be an invaluable resource as they continue their journey in recovery.
