Introduction and Basic Services

Located 25 miles south of Austin and 75 miles away from San Antonio in Driftwood, Texas, Driftwood Recovery offers residential treatment, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and a specialized pain recovery program for those with substance abuse issues, process disorders or chronic pain. The facility was founded by James Flowers, PhD, who for 20 years has been a leader in pain treatment and addiction recovery; Michael Beard, a healthcare executive; Vicki Faust, MBA and Peter Fluor, who has had personal experience with recovery.

Facility and Meals

The 18-bed, 85-acre property used to be a bed and breakfast and is composed residential areas, the cafeteria and the clinical building.

Gender-specific double rooms have their own patios and large windows. Bathrooms have rain showerheads, spa tubs and large mirrors, all surrounded by modern grey tiles.

An indoor lounge area with modern, high-end furniture and an exposed brick wall sits next to a large, open-plan stainless steel kitchen and a ping pong table. Three chefs prepare breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, often using a lean protein and greens, and a backyard chicken coop and garden with 30 beds ensure fresh eggs and farm-to-table vegetables.

Floor-to-ceiling glass windows in the fireplace-laden, wood-ceilinged dining room provide views over the sculptured grounds. There is a TV in the additional adjacent lounge as well as in the day room, which has modern couches and chairs, a soft mauve rug, rafted wooden ceilings and modular open curios. An exceptionally large fitness room is outfitted with various Pilates machines and connects straight to the outdoors.

Outdoor areas take advantage of the beauty of the Texan desert, with patios overlooking the manicured backyard and its pool area. Backyard seating is available in the shade of the large trees on the property.

Smoking is allowed in designated areas.

Treatment Protocol and Team

A light detox is available for clients who need it; it does not use medication but residents are closely monitored to ensure stable health and nutrition. More acute cases are referred to a building five minutes away.

An average stay is 42 days, though clients start with 30 in residential treatment and get clinical extensions on two-week bases if needed.

The program at Driftwood Recovery puts stress on one-on-one therapy, which is meant to ensure proper diagnosis and plan treatment in a holistic manner.

Group therapy is also an important part of treatment at Driftwood, helping to overcome isolation, stress and shame and build self-esteem. Groups may be as small as five or fewer people or a little larger depending on the therapist who is leading the session.

Treatment modalities include CBT, DBT, psychotherapy, psychodrama, EMDR, MBT, CAMS, nutritional instruction, social learning therapy, applied behavior analysis and ACT. This is extended into the pain recovery and management program, which deals with everything from traumatic injury, to arthritis, migraines or opiate hyperalgesia. The residential program, PHP and IOP treatments all employ similar modalities.

Counselors lead 12-step sessions for both clients and families.

IOP participants take part in activities and group and individual therapy up to five days a week, for six weeks or longer as decided for each individual.

The therapeutic team includes a full psychiatric, clinical and medical staff. On-board are LPC-Ss, a double-board certified medical doctor specializing in multi-disciplinary pain management as well as naturopathic medicine, an FNP-C, a fitness director, a spiritual advisor and PhD-level psychologists. The doctor is on-site on Mondays and clients can be scheduled to see him at his office in town throughout the week if needed. A nurse practitioner, who works with clients for treatment and to adjust medication, is on-site five days a week and can come in on weekends as required. There is a full nursing staff on the weekend and some weeknights. A psychiatric nurse, overseen by a psychiatric doctor, is also available every week. In total there are seven PhD-level clinicians on staff, including a trauma specialist, one focusing on impulse control and a CSTAT focusing on sex addiction and relationship issues. These clinicians are the ones who lead group sessions and conduct primary therapy, not interns.

Residents have three group meetings a day, individual therapy at least once a week (often two to four times a week to start), meetings with a psychiatrist at least twice a week, a meeting with a dietician and one with a spiritual advisor, as well as sessions with relationship or trauma specialists as needed.

Clients may be referred to the Riverside sober living facility after completion of treatment.

Aftercare includes relapse prevention education, teaching residents to avoid environmental, psychological and social triggers as well as how to cope with stress. It also helps to establish a rigid structure that includes healthy amounts of sleep and exercise as well as engagement in hobbies.

Bonus Amenities

Experiential therapies include aquatic, fitness and nutritional therapy, meditation, Pilates, biking, ropes courses, hiking, kayaking and yoga.

Family programming is extensive, lasting two-and-a-half days on specific dates every month. Families receive therapy as well, including Motivational Interviewing (MI), solution-focused therapy, family mapping, 12-step facilitation and life skills coaching.

There is an alumni holiday party available.

Summary

With a treatment team focused on care given directly by high-level clinicians instead of interns, Driftwood Recovery offers an unparalleled level of service that can cater to even the most resistant of addicts. The facility itself is calming and atmospheric, meaning that those living at the rehab will never feel caged in or uncomfortable. In terms of luxury treatment in the state of Texas, Driftwood Recovery is one of the finest options available.
