Introduction and Basic Services

Opened in Reseda, California in 2008, The Discovery House is a Joint Commission accredited facility designed with comfort, safety and privacy in mind. Whether residents need help with addiction or co-occurring disorders, this oasis provides both sub-acute detox and residential treatment followed by a comprehensive aftercare program.

Facility and Meals

Set in a residential area of Reseda, this gate-surrounded, home-like facility is warm and welcoming. The pool and media areas keep residents feeling both comfortable and active.

Residents share an accommodation with two twin beds and one roommate. There are no private rooms. Full capacity is 32 residents. The number of bathrooms in the facility meets California state code.

There is access to TV in most common areas of the facility as well as an on-site gym with no restrictions for access based upon length of stay.

A private chef provides balanced nutrition for all residents. The meals are divided into two six-week courses with the dietary needs in mind. While this is a caffeine-free facility, there are no other dietary restrictions in place. The Discovery House has its own garden on site, which provides many of the fruits and vegetables served.

Treatment and Protocol Team

The treatment process focuses on the clients regaining balance. Instead of utilizing the same treatment pathway for all residents, both Medical Director Dr. Walter Thomas and the care staff customize a treatment plan for each resident. Here, residents find a three-to-one client-to-staff member ratio. Dr. Thomas is at the facility at least once a week. There is an LPN on-site every day.

This location offers sub-acute detox that lasts between five and seven days. There is also residential substance abuse treatment and an outpatient program. As part of their customization plan, it is assessed which treatment pathway is best, including residential versus outpatient. A transitional living program ensures that residents who are not ready to leave the program can live in a sobriety-centric environment. Here, sober coaches are available as well as 12-step meetings and daily meditation. Following treatment at the facility is an alumni program with a coordinator keeping all former residents connected.

Another service of this facility is co-occurring disorder treatment. In addition to addiction, The Discovery House is able to treat depression, anxiety, grief or loss, Bipolar disorder, secondary eating issues, personality disorders, mood disorders and psychological trauma. For dual diagnosis residents, if he or she is already taking medication for a prior mental health diagnoses, that medication is monitored and administered by medical staff on-site. While not licensed to medically diagnose during a resident’s stay, the initial assessment with Dr. Thomas can include diagnosis and prescriptions.

There are two phases of the treatment plan with a 30-day minimum stay. The first phase is a 30-day recovery that can begin with a five to seven day detox. During phase one, cell phones are not permitted. The second phase begins after the initial 30-day mark.

Specializing in the disease concept of addiction, Stages of Change, CBT, Motivational

Interviewing (MI), trauma-informed care and rational emotive behavioral therapy, The Discovery House supports a myriad of healing modalities.

This facility is 12-step oriented. The SMART Recovery plan is not implemented here, however if a resident does not want to participate in 12-step recovery, counselors can help the resident come up with a plan that works for him or her.

Individual therapy occurs once a week, but additional sessions can be scheduled with the resident’s counselor.

While the exact number of staff members on site is not public, the average numbers range from 10 to 20 during the day and six to 20 overnight. On-site staff member accreditations include MD, CACD-II, CAODC, MA, CATC, LPN, certified HIV counselor and licensing by the California Department of Healthcare Services.

Every Saturday, multi-family talk therapy sessions are available. Family members are educated about addiction and recovery as well as given counselor support.

Bonus Amenities

Added bonuses are an outdoor barbeque area, a full service gym, yoga sessions, morning meditation, psychodrama classes, music therapy, art therapy and an outdoor pool. The most notable way The Discovery House sets itself apart is meeting the individual in his or her current state, not expecting all residents to be ready for the same treatment plan.

Clients at The Discovery House can anticipate a peaceful stay focused on long-term recovery with peer discussion sessions and daily activities. The over one hundred years of combined medical experience mean that this care team is filled with both knowledge and compassion for each resident’s journey into recovery.
