Singer and actress Demi Lovato, who is celebrating five years of sobriety, says that her life has been transformed since she gave up drugs and alcohol.

“It feels amazing,” Lovato said, according to PEOPLE. “All I’ve been doing is focusing on bettering myself. It’s been quite the journey, but it’s well worth it.”

Through her recovery process, Lovato has learned about letting go. “Surrendering is the most important thing whenever you’re trying to battle your demons,” Lovato said. “You have to admit that you have a problem first, and then you can overcome them.”

Lovato, who is 24, had been struggling with substance abuse, eating disorders and mental health issues in the public eye since she was 18. But rather than trying to hide her bipolar disorder and substance abuse issues, the actress has spoken openly about getting into recovery.

Last summer, Lovato began incorporating motivational seminars into her performances. In the sessions she covers everything from addiction and recovery to establishing healthy relationships.

“This is a chance for you to come hear influential speakers talk about their personal journeys,” Lovato said. “After these talks, you’ll be inspired and motivated to overcome your personal fears and setbacks. We want everyone to leave empowered to start the journey on living your best life.”

Last year, Lovato celebrated her four-year sobriety milestone on Twitter. “This last year I experienced so much life and too much death…but I made it through… Sober. #4Years #GodsWill.”

Last summer, Lovato split up with her long-time boyfriend, actor Wilmer Valderrama, who she credits with helping to save her life. “He’ll never take credit for a lot of my sobriety and my recovery, but I guarantee it, I wouldn’t be alive without him today,” she told The Huffington Post in 2015.

In June, the duo made the break-up public by posting together on social media: “This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends,” their statement said. “We will always be supportive of one another. Thank you to everyone who has offered us kindness and support over the years.”

Despite that heartbreak, Lovato is now dating MMA Fighter Guilherme Vasconcelos, and says she is happy. “I’m just having fun, you know? And my life is in a really good place right now,” she told PEOPLE. “He makes me laugh.”
