California Drug Rehab Center Review

Considering Rehab? See the highest rated rehab centers in the country.

Nestled in a residential neighborhood 10 minutes from the Pacific Ocean, the scenic beauty and natural surroundings of Rock Solid Recovery provide plenty of space and silent reflection for a successful recovery.

Whatever your addiction, it’s likely that this all-male facility in Orange County, Calif., has a program that addresses it. (For women, there's a sister center, Sure Haven.) Consisting of programs that range from 30 to 90 days, Rock Solid covers the full spectrum of substance addictions, as well as eating disorders, gambling, sex/love addiction and dual diagnoses. They also directly tackle trauma and PTSD through methods like EMDR therapy.

All residents (six max) are assigned roommates in Wallace 1, a three-bedroom, two-bath, 2,500-square-foot mini-mansion made of “natural materials,” according to the rehab’s website. Residents vary in age and stage of life (successful businessmen to college kids), but most get along with one another, and even get something valuable out of the relationships. “This program helped me build a connection with people like me that I still stay connected with in recovery after graduating,” said one former resident, who had been in for alcoholism.

Each client is assigned an army of “caring” and “helpful” staff, including a psychiatrist, nurse, psychologist, primary therapist, case manager, spiritual care counselor, nutritionist and admissions counselor. While the doctors don’t live in-house, a former patient said all residents “met often with other doctors and professionals provided by the treatment center.” If this all sounds pricey, well—it is: $18,000 for 30 days, all-inclusive. That said, Rock Solid offers various financing and loan options.

Treatment programs here are firmly rooted in 12-step principles, but there also is an alternative “holistic” 12-step program that’s rich in New Age recovery techniques like t’ai chi and Reiki. Daily life is highly “structured” and “routine-oriented,” with treatment groups five days a week and “experiential activities” on Saturdays. On-site yoga is offered, as well as trips to a local gym (membership is provided) six days a week.

“We were required to commit to doing certain chores and to attending recovery groups and meetings,” said one recent alumnus. Rules for and expectations of clients are made clear, and enforcement of them is handled “decisively, but not punitively,” according to one former resident.

Rock Solid’s on-site executive chef, Megan, prepares “healthy” meals twice a day at Wallace 1 (breakfast is on your own), with coffee available upon request. Steak and chicken dishes were among the favorites of most residents, while the Sunday brunch was also given rave reviews.

While some rehab facilities are notoriously technophobic, clients at Rock Solid are allowed ample access to the outside world. A computer lab offers full Internet access, while flatscreen TVs with DirectTV are in every bedroom. Residents may keep their mobile phones, too, except for during detox or a client’s initial 72 hours in residence. Tech usage is unlimited, so long as staff do not deem it as interfering with treatment.

Most former residents The Fix spoke to reported being able to kick their addictions, a pursuit aided by Rock Solid’s extensive aftercare plan. Extended-care and transitional programs are available immediately upon graduation, followed by sober living. Residents also can start thinking about their future outside of rehab while still in treatment, by taking part in academic, transitional and vocational programs.

Much of the success of Rock Solid’s alumni has to do with the love they felt from the facility’s employees. “I have never experienced a staff at a treatment center that was as committed,” said one satisfied customer. “Rock Solid equipped me with the tools, knowledge and support system needed to recover and live a happy life.”
