Country music star Willie Nelson has been creating mellow tunes for years, but now the Texas-based singer is looking to cultivate his own brand of marijuana called Willie’s Reserve.
Nelson, 81, hopes to have his own strains of weed for Willie’s Reserve and is looking to launch a national chain of marijuana stores as early as 2016. Nelson plans to focus his attention on states where marijuana has already been legalized, like Colorado, Washington and Alaska, and hopes his product will be “reflective of his passion.”

“This is a culmination of Willie’s vision, and his whole life,” said Michael Bowman, Nelson’s spokesman. “Really, he wants it, at the end of the day, to envelop what his personal morals and convictions are.”
But, Nelson didn’t embark on his new journey alone. Nelson’s family has helped him develop his marijuana brand with the goal of preserving Nelson’s passion, but also tackling environmental and social issues.
“Willie has spent a lifetime in support of cannabis, both the industrial hemp side and the marijuana side,” said Bowman. “He wants to be something that’s reflective of his passion. Ultimately, it’s his, but it was developed by his family, and their focus on environmental and social issues, and in particular this crazy War on Drugs, and trying to be a bright light amongst this trail as we’re trying to extract ourselves from the goo of prohibition.”
Nelson has been a long-time advocate of marijuana and claims to have even smoked a joint on the roof of the White House. When asked if he really rolled one atop 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., Nelson replied with a grin, “No, I rolled it before I got up there.”
