Introduction and Basic Services

The Chopra Addiction and Wellness Center is located in Squamish, British Columbia, about an hour north of Vancouver. It offers a residential program for the treatment of substance and process addictions as well as co-occurring disorders. Addiction specialist Nirmala Raniga, who has worked in the field for nearly 30 years, founded the organization in 2009. The facility operates in partnership with the Chopra Center for Wellbeing, an alternative medicine training center co-founded by integrative medicine specialist Deepak Chopra, and is endorsed by Chopra himself.

Facility and Meals

The secluded facility, set against the forested background of Squamish, is composed of two large gender-specific homes with a bed of tulips and a picnic table out front. The residences house a total of four to 16 clients at a time. The backyard is large and green, with plenty of space for meditation, outdoor yoga or nature walks to the river.

Though bedrooms do occasionally end up being private depending on the number of clients on-site, they are designed to be shared between two or three people. Bedrooms feature large beds, high vaulted ceilings and occasionally entrances onto rustic wooden patios. Men are housed the building that contains the kitchen and dining area, while women stay in the upstairs of the main building. Downstairs in the main building is treatment space, a social area, a group room, massage areas and therapy offices. There is space specifically dedicated to yoga, another crucial element of treatment at the facility, as well as an on-site fitness center.

a team of chefs prepare nutritious, vegetarian meals. Examples of some of the offerings include Ayurvedic kitchari, a basmati rice dish loaded with spices, quinoa ratatouille salad, berry smoothies, tomato gazpacho and Mediterranean pasta with artichokes, Swiss chard, Kalamata olives and diced tomatoes.

Treatment Protocol and Team

New clients receive a bio-psycho-social and spiritual assessment as well as a medical consultation. There is no detox available at this facility, but referrals can be provided if necessary. Treatment is individualized to each client, ranging from a seven-day program called Wellness Weeks geared towards stress relief, to six weeks. Residents are encouraged to take treatment at their own pace while remaining goal-oriented and adhering to a daily schedule that begins at 6:30 am and ends at 10 pm.

The program entails two weekly 50-minute individual sessions, daily 90-minute group sessions, meditation and yoga twice a day. Individual meetings with a psychiatrist are available upon request and for an additional cost. Elements from the Chopra Curriculum are also integrated into daily treatment, including sessions on addiction, non-nurturing behaviors and healing the mind, body and spirit. Additional groups cover relapse prevention and learning healthy boundaries; support groups including 12-step meetings are accessible to residents.

Those who complete at least a 28-day stay are eligible for discounted aftercare therapy for up to 12 weeks. Also included are complimentary follow-ups every three months in the year after completion of treatment.

Clinical staff includes an art therapist, yoga and meditation instructors, a Master’s-level psychotherapist, a registered psychiatric nurse (RPN), alternative medicine practitioners, a certified psychodramatist, an energy healer, a holistic psychotherapist, a nutritionist, a Bachelor’s-level therapist, a PhD-level psychologist and a counselor who specializes in EMDR and Aboriginal Focusing Oriented Therapy. There are at least two staff members available around the clock.

Visitors are allowed between 2 pm and 4 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Bonus Amenities

Holistic treatment options include art therapy, massages twice a week, weekly acupuncture, yoga, energy healing, horticulture therapy, healing sound sessions, mindfulness meditation and swimming. A certified therapy dog is available. Additional therapies such as nutritional education with cooking demonstrations and those focusing on the Eastern practice of Ayurvedic healing are integrated into treatment.

The Chopra Addiction and Wellness Center offers holistic services that go above and beyond the norm for most residential programs.
