Introduction and Basic Services

Located in the scenic coastal city of Hollywood Beach, California, the Changing Tides residential campus is an upscale treatment facility 30 miles northwest of Malibu. After running successful outpatient and sober living facilities for two years, Berkeley and Stephanie Dains founded this CARF-accredited program in 2016.

Programming can include a full continuum of care from detox and residential treatment to a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), and beach side sober living. Services are designed for adult men and women who are struggling with mental health disorders as well as substance use disorders. Changing Tides integrates evidence-based practices with experiential therapy and alternative wellness modalities.

Facility and Meals

Located on the beach, clients participating in the detox and residential program stay in an beautiful home with ocean views. The accommodations are spacious with plenty of room for clients to relax and reflect. With only six clients in treatment at a time, Changing Tides provides residents both privacy and a communal, fun atmosphere. The rooms, most of which are private, are equipped with queen-size beds. In addition, there are common rooms with flat-screen TVs as well as cozy places perfect for rest and self-reflection. Depending on the client’s needs, they may be allowed computer and phone access after the first week. The Changing Tides’ outpatient program and sober living facilities are located 10 miles north in the town of Ventura.

Clients in outpatient can choose to stay at home or decide to live in one of the upscale transitional care homes for extended support.

The culinary team at Changing Tides plans meals based on a balanced diet that is packed with nutrients and delicious, one of the favorites being a “superfood smoothie”. Gluten free and vegetarians options are available for clients if needed. Snacks are provided for clients participating in IOP. If the clients continue into a sober living facility, they are responsible for preparing meals with provided groceries.

Treatment Protocol and Team

As previously mentioned, Changing Tides offers residential treatment, PHP, IOP and beach side sober living. Length of treatment in each division varies depending on the specific needs of the client. If he or she needs a medically supervised detox, it typically lasts between five and seven days. The comprehensive residential program lasts between 30 and 90 days long, PHP an additional 10 to 15 days and IOP can be as short as six weeks, or as long as a full year.

The residential program integrates traditional therapies with wellness activities. To that end, clients begin their day at 8 am with morning meditation. From there, individual and group therapy as well as psychoeducation comprise most of their day. Each client is matched with a Master’s- or PhD-level therapist trained in CBT, DBT and EMDR. And clients also have weekly visits with a psychiatrist.

In addition to the above-mentioned psychiatrist, the Changing Tides team is comprised of addiction specialists, psychologists, clinical social workers, a life coach, an art therapist and several yoga therapists.

An on-site client advocate ensures that clients receive the most customized program for their needs, and also creates aftercare plans for continued support. Clients can be connected to 12-step and Refuge Recovery meetings in their respective communities, if deemed beneficial for post-care.

Bonus Amenities

Changing Tides takes full advantages of the gorgeous beach surroundings. Clients are encouraged to enjoy the outdoors and work out at a nearby gym several times a week. In addition, clients work with an exercise physiologist to design a healthy lifestyle program. The aforementioned experiential therapies like yoga, art, music and cinema therapy are also part of the collaborative Changing Tides program. Additionally, the facility has life coaching and life skills development to further help clients with their transition, and hosts weekly relapse prevention groups for alumni.

Summary

While relatively new, Changing Tides Treatment Centers reflect the experience and wisdom of its founders, who understand what clients are going through in their journey to recovery. The comprehensive residential program offers highly customized treatment for clients and includes both dual diagnosis support and alternative therapies. Located on a beautiful beach with top of the line accommodations, this facility is a great option. And it does not hurt that Changing Tides accepts most PPO insurances.
