Introduction and Basic Services

Situated in the scenic foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Center for Hope of the Sierras provides treatment programs for adults and adolescents with eating disorders and co-occurring conditions. Opened in 2003 in Reno, Nevada, this CARF-accredited facility is one of the few residential programs that offers treatment for men with eating disorders. Center for Hope provides comprehensive treatment spanming a full curriculum that includes residential care, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) to clients struggling with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating and any co-occurring disorders like diabetes and substance abuse.

Facility and Meals

The facility focuses on providing a safe and supportive atmosphere. Clients in the residential program stay in a 10-bed country estate equipped with amenities like a spacious open floor plan, roomy common areas, decks that wrap-around the entire facility, a fireplace and beautiful outdoor surroundings. Residents sleep in twin-sized beds and have at least one roommate but no more than two. Clients are expected to concentrate on their recovery journey, and are only permitted the use of electronic devices such as cellphones or laptops during daily free times or weekends.

In order to confront and conquer compulsive eating behaviors, individuals prepare their own meals. This includes working together with a nutritionist upon entering the program. Clients take regular outings to restaurants to work through the anxiety of eating in social situations. By the end of treatment, residents take part in shopping for food, menu preparation and eating with others. The facility accommodates dietary preferences and restrictions like gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Center for Hope’s approach places a focus on creating a mentality of mindful eating, a principle advocated by the Intuitive Eating Philosophy, which encourages clients learn to see food as a necessity to being healthy. The residential program at Center for Hope is tailored to the specific needs of the client and includes a vast array of therapies including CBT, DBT, ACT and EMDR, the latter designed to to alleviate trauma that may be a contributing factor to current stress. Clients can expect individual and group therapy, family therapy and, if needed, support for co-occurring disorders. In addition, residents are educated on relapse prevention, body image and managing anxiety. Holistic methods include poetry writing, meditation practice and life skills training. For residents with co-occurring issues with substances abuse, transportation is available to 12-step meetings three to five times a week.

PHP treatment is offered to those clients who need the treatment options without the around-the-clock supervision. IOP consists of four hours of treatment daily, seven day a week.

The Center for Hope team is comprised of a nutrition therapist, MFTs, LCSWs, a large nursing staff and a psychiatrist for medication management. There are also specialized therapists like an art therapist and a yoga instructor.

Bonus Amenities

Residents enjoy an array of experiential therapies like music appreciation, massage therapy, reiki, yoga classes, cooking classes and creative expression. Equine therapy and solution-focused therapy sessions are provided as is a specialized curriculum for diabetic clients. Clients take trips to groceries stores and to go out to eat but also enjoy fun activities such as movie nights and attending the theater. In addition, clients can start having family visitors after two weeks of treatment, though it’s usually permitted on a case-by-case basis.

Since 2003, Center for Hope of the Sierras has treated men, women and adolescents with eating disorders. The emphasis on love and community is powerful and holistic therapies are smartly used in healing the whole person.
