Introduction and Basic Services
The Carrier Clinic’s Blake Recovery Center is a residential and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) facility located in Belle Mead, New Jersey. The campus is about a 40-minute drive from New Jersey’s capital of Trenton. The Carrier Clinic treats substance abuse and dual diagnoses. It was established in 1910 as the Belle Mead Farm Colony and Sanatorium and has been treating addiction since the 1980s.

Facility and Meals
Set on over 100 acres of farm-like space, the peaceful Carrier Clinic campus has peacocks, chickens, horses and a pond full of fish. Additionally, the facility has an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and picnic areas. Indoors, the Carrier Clinic has two gyms, an amphitheater, a library, a chapel, a multi-sensory space and areas for creative therapies.

There are a total of 40 beds. Bedrooms house two people and come with desks, bookshelves, bright linens, cozy twin beds and TVs. Bathrooms are semi-private. The campus features cozy and bright group therapy rooms.

Meals are prepared by a resident chef and served in a high-ceilinged cafeteria with large windows and comfortable, four-seat tables. Clients have a choice of nutritious options like schnitzel with vegetables, fruit with cottage cheese and sandwiches.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Intervention services and detox are available. Detox is medically monitored 24/7 and the Carrier Clinic urges that clients receive Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) in cases of severe opiate withdrawal. In general, detox treatment is two to five days and the inpatient program is seven to 10 days.

Residential clients undergo a treatment program that includes individual and group therapy, didactic sessions, education on addiction, fitness training and 12-step programming. Individual therapy takes place with licensed and certified addiction counselors, who regularly meet with clients for reviews of treatment plans, personal assessments and to provide any additional support as needed. Treatment modalities include therapies for stress, anger management skills, ECT, OT, grief support groups, physical therapy, nutritional consultations, multi-sensory therapy, CBT, mindfulness therapy and yoga.

The clinical team is extensive, including physicians, internists, clinical psychiatrists, case managers, Master’s-level therapists, MHTs, crisis intervention specialists, residential counselors, addiction counselors, OTs, physical therapists, LSWs, LPCs, ARPNs and a psychiatrist specializing in ECT.

Outpatient services utilize 12-step programs as well as individualized treatment plans using evidence-based and other therapies for each client. Also included are educational services about addiction. Clients work with addiction counselors and licensed social workers in regular one-on-one and family sessions. The program runs on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 pm.

Aftercare includes developing relapse prevention skills as well as linking clients to discharge planning services, treatment and support resources. The Carrier Clinic has monthly alumni meetings and events, including ones for clients who have completed the IOP.

Every Tuesday a set of educational and process groups are offered that focus on family dynamics, which a client’s family may choose to also attend. The groups are designed to open communication and help everyone understand and manage codependence, enabling behaviors and boundary setting. The Carrier Clinic also has a Weekend Codependency Program.

Visitation is allowed daily during specific hours. Computers and cell phones are not permitted.

Bonus Amenities

Equine therapy is available, as are creative therapies and dog therapy.
