Introduction and Basic Services

Nestled in the rolling hills of Malibu, California, The Canyon at Peace Park offers private residential treatment for co-occurring disorders with evidence-based practices and 12-step programming. The Canyon at Peace Park was opened in 2004 by the Foundations Recovery Network, a group working with individuals who are dealing with co-occurring chemical dependencies and mental health issues to provide integrated treatment services and outreach for clients’ families.

The Malibu location is one of three of the brand’s treatment facilities available around the Los Angeles area. It offers a unique meditative treatment background in the serene seclusion of Malibu’s renowned natural beauty.

Though The Canyon’s location in Malibu is residential-only, outpatient care is available nearby in Santa Monica.

Facility and Meals

There are two eight-bed, gender-segregated residential homes on the property, Casa Azul and Casa Angeles. Each offers luxurious living rooms outfitted with plush furniture and beautiful hardwood floors or comfortable carpeting. Bedrooms are spacious with room for two residents (though private rooms are available for an additional cost), a balcony and, at Casa Azul, desks where residents may work or simply reflect on the day. Large dining and living areas overlook lagoon-style saltwater pools, which at both houses are flanked by greenery and spaces to lounge. Every home also has a cozy group room, which is outfitted with leather chairs placed in a circle so as to facilitate interpersonal growth and interaction.

Upstairs in Casa Azul is a larger living room with a TV and pool table as well as a balcony with exquisite views overlooking the pool and Malibu’s green hills. There is an on-site gym complete with treadmills, stationary bikes, yoga mats as well as strength training equipment including free weights and medicine balls. In addition to the on-site gym, there is also a climbing wall adjacent to Casa Angeles.

Outdoor access is particularly expansive, with 120 acres of nature walks like the “12 Step Path,” which features centering and calming landmarks including The Grove and The Labyrinth.

Two chefs are on hand to create gourmet meals made with organic produce and pesticide- and antibiotic-free ingredients in order to help reduce cravings and rebalance the body.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Detox programs are available at The Canyon at Peace Park and vary in length depending on each individual resident’s needs. Detox and stabilization is the first step in a four-level program, which also includes reflection, preparation and action in order to ensure that a plan is put in place to maintain sobriety.

Traditional methods employed include CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR. There are also a number of supplemental alternative therapies regularly implemented at The Canyon at Peace Park including art therapy, yoga, adventure therapy, guided hiking trips, ropes courses, cooking classes and equine therapy.

Each client has a team of specialists: a clinical psychologist, a psychiatrist and an internist, working to create a personal treatment plan. There is a high staff-to-client ratio, with MFTs and LCSWs on hand to facilitate treatment.

Aftercare is a crucial part of recovery at The Canyon at Peace Park, offering on-campus gender-specific lodging and 15 hours of therapy weekly.

Bonus Amenities

Clients can expect frequent trips to the pristine shores of Malibu’s beaches.

There is a meditation dome available off of Casa Angeles—in which the Dalai Lama himself once meditated—a bright but serene space with comfortable floors and a calming, multi-denominational altar space. Much of the décor matches the ethos of this meditation dome, as there are Tibetan prayer flags—meant to bring peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom—strung up around the property. Additionally, there is a sweat lodge available.

An extensive alumni community exists, with regular events for professionals and those in recovery. Alumni themselves gather regularly at The Canyon to discuss their own paths and speak to current residents.

Intervention services are available, as are sober escorts and travel support.

Summary

Using an integrative approach that combines a focus on a healthy, organic diet, fitness, and spirit wellbeing, The Canyon at Peace Park offers a multi-pronged recovery approach in a singularly beautiful setting. The mix of focus on traditional recovery practices as well as specialized alternative ones in order to address co-occurring issues is unparalleled.
