Introduction and Basic Services

Located in beautiful Cambridge, Massachusetts, The Cambridge Eating Disorder Center (CEDC) is a behavioral health organization that provides treatment for clients struggling with eating disorders and those with co-occurring disorders. Founded in 2000, this Joint-Commission accredited organization provides a continuum of care for both adolescent and adult male and female clients. The Cambridge facility provides the full spectrum of treatment including residential care, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), outpatient and transitional living. There is also a CEDC location in New Hampshire that provides exclusively outpatient services including PHP, IOP and outpatient treatment for clients over the age of 12.

Facility and Meals

Located in Harvard Square, the residential program provides around-the-clock care to female adolescent and adult clients ages 12 and up. The New England-style home has 25 beds on two floors, with the adolescents and adults separated. Each floor resembles a college dormitory, with clients sharing bedrooms that are equipped with twin-sized beds and storage space. There are common areas with cable TV, plenty of rooms for therapy and group sessions and a stocked kitchen. For adolescent clients unable to attend school due to treatment, CEDC provides on-site tutoring.

A goal of CEDC is for residents to establish a positive relationship with food. Upon admission into the program, a registered dietician assigns an individualized meal plan, and clients are responsible for selecting meals based on that plan. The facility’s on-site culinary staff provides three meals and three snacks daily.

Treatment Protocol and Team

CEDC provides the structure and care necessary for clients to make sustainable change. To this end, each client undergoes an intake assessment to determine their specific needs. The length of stay varies depending on the resident, and can range from three weeks to three months. Once in the program, residents participate in individual and group therapy sessions rooted in a vast array of therapies including evidence-based methods like CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Group therapy focuses on topics like relapse prevention, self-esteem and body image. In addition, residents receive counseling on nutrition as well as family therapy. Participation in 12-step meetings is encouraged but not mandatory. The facility also provides medication management for those with co-occurring disorders.

Following discharge, CEDC offers several outpatient options in two different locations. Transitional living is also offered in Cambridge for clients 18 and over. CEDC’s multidisciplinary team is comprised of psychologists, medical doctors, case managers, clinical dietitians, licensed social workers, clinicians and a nursing team.

Bonus Amenities

Family involvement is a key component to treatment success. With this inmind, the facility offers regular visiting hours every evening and on weekends.

CEDC provides several holistic therapies like art therapy, mood monitoring, group goal setting and yoga. In addition, clients participate in nutrition counseling, cooking classes and undergo exposure therapy at restaurants and grocery stores.

Summary

The Cambridge Eating Disorder Center provides a full curriculum of treatment for clients struggling with eating disorders and dual diagnoses. The well-rounded program utilizes dietary counseling, traditional therapies and holistic methods. With an experienced and compassionate staff, nice accommodations and a comprehensive program, CEDC is a great option. In addition, most major insurance is accepted.
