Introduction and Basic Services

Black Bear Lodge is a sub-acute residential rehab located in Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia, a hundred miles northeast of Atlanta. Part of the Foundations Recovery Network, Black Bear Lodge treats substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The facility also offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). CEO Adam Marion is a Master’s-level social worker with experience in working with dual diagnosis cases.

Facility and Meals

The campus sits right at the edge of the Chattahoochee National Forest and is set in picturesque American wilderness, nestled among multicolored forests, running rivers and purple, fog-laden mountains. The house, which used to be a resort, is truly a luxurious lodge, outfitted with logs, wooden awnings and rustic balconies flanked by flowering trees. An outdoor pool is available to clients during the warm seasons. In the wintertime the campus is dusted with snow, a beautiful vision among the bare trees and evergreens.

A lounge area has luxurious leather and suede armchairs next to a roaring stone fireplace, while additional living rooms have couches and tables lit by sculptural lamps. The dining room has bright windows overlooking the facility’s grounds so that clients seated at the wooden tables may either chat with other residents or simply admire the surrounding nature. Nutritious and organic meals are prepared by an executive chef. There is a theater inside the lodge, as well as an on-site gym. An off-site gym is also available, with transportation provided.

There are a total of 80 people on average at the facility, including detox and clients of both genders. Double bedrooms are warm and cozy, with the feel of both a log cabin and a comfortable, homey space. They are outfitted with two twin beds, an armoire, an armchair and a desk and also have large windows and doors that lead out onto a patio with lounge chairs.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Black Bear Lodge requires that clients complete a detox program before entering residential or IOP treatment, and provide a sub-acute program for doing so. Those requiring acute detox are referred to an outside provider. The detox may involve medication and typically lasts from three days to a week; clients are monitored and given support throughout. An outpatient detox is also offered, wherein clients may live at home and come in for monitoring appointments.

Care at Black Bear Lodge utilizes goal- and evidence-based treatments like Motivational Interviewing (MI), trauma resolution, relapse prevention, life and coping skills development, DBT, CBT, EMDR, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). Additional therapies include grief and loss therapy, psychoeducational and process groups, an LGBT diversity group, gender-specific process groups, co-ed lecture groups and a group for professionals. Also used are mindfulness, nutritional education, fitness therapy, recreational therapy, team-building exercises, developing social skills and educating clients about their treatments.

Residential programs last an average of 30 days but can be extended to 90 days.

Group and individual therapy occur daily and two times a week respectively. The program implements 12-step and Refuge Recovery philosophies but clients are not required to adhere to any particular method if they are not interested. Meetings are available daily, either on- or off-site.

The treatment team includes a physician, an NCAC, psychiatrists, an LCSW, LPCs and psychologists. Clients have the same therapist for both individual sessions and group process meetings.

IOP schedules depend on the severity of the addiction, ranging from a small number of hours once a week or an amount equivalent to a full-time job. These treatments can also accommodate dual diagnoses, and may involve attendance at support groups.

Family therapy, which uses CBT and works to understand family systems, is involved as part of treatment. There is also a family weekend scheduled monthly.

Aftercare is designed to help residents maintain sobriety after completion of the program. Clients may attend the IOP’s process groups and/or continue with CBT, MI or other therapy programs. Aftercare includes an alumni program that uses the Heroes in Recovery support system.

Bonus Amenities

Incorporated into treatment plans are fitness therapy, nutritional education, mindfulness and meditation therapy, acupuncture, adventure therapy and creative therapies as well as a range of holistic treatments like yoga, weekly equine therapy, weekly ziplining, weekly hikes on Mount Yonah (with staff approval), kayaking, monthly horseback riding and recreational therapy.

Summary

Black Bear Lodge has individualized treatments that combine both evidence-based and holistic practices to ensure a wide range of options for clients’ recoveries. The treatment program is ideal for those who prefer a rehab that stresses daily recreational therapy over conventional talk therapies.
