Bill Cosby faced his first criminal charge today since 50 women have spoken out to accuse him of drugging and/or sexually assaulting them. An arrest warrant was issued for the 78-year-old comedian for allegedly drugging and raping Andrea Constand, a former employee of Temple University, in January 2004, Montgomery County District Attorney-Elect Kevin Steele said at a press conference this morning.

Cosby was arraigned near his home in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, and was released this afternoon after posting $1 million bail. A preliminary hearing was set for Jan. 14, which remains within the 12-year statute of limitations for felony sex assault.

"A prosecutor's job is to follow the evidence wherever it leads and whenever it comes to light," said Steele. "Upon examination of all the evidence, today we are able to seek justice on behalf of the victim."

Constand, 42, is now a massage therapist in Ontario, Canada. Back in 2004, Cosby, who she considered a “friend and mentor,” allegedly “made two sexual advances at her that were rejected," said Steele. "[Then] Mr. Cosby urged her to take pills and to drink wine, the effect of which left her unable to [rebuff his advances]." He then sexually assaulted Constand, who was “semi-conscious" throughout the ordeal, according to the lawsuit.

Cosby has previously admitted under oath to sexual relations with Constand, which he claims were consensual. But in new court filings last summer Constand said she was in a relationship with a woman at the time, and called Cosby a “narcissist” for ignoring that she is gay.

The entertainer has vehemently denied the allegations of the more than 50 women who have spoken out about his assaults so far. Just two weeks before the warrant for his arrest, Cosby filed defamation lawsuits against several of the accusers, who have in turn filed their own defamation lawsuits against him.
