Jackass star and professional skateboarder, Bam Margera, was arrested on drunk driving charges in Los Angeles on Sunday morning (Jan. 7).

This marks his first DUI arrest, reports People, not long after he reported doing well in his recovery in March of last year.

California Highway Patrol officers say they spotted Margera talking on his cell phone, which led them to notice “signs of possible intoxication.” They proceeded to stop the MTV star and conduct “standard field sobriety tests.” CHP public information officer Juan Galvan confirmed to People that Margera was “subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.”

He was out on $15,000 bond by the afternoon.

Last we had heard from Bam, he was exploring Spain, sober and doing well. Leaving the country allowed him to focus on his recovery and get back to skateboarding after a long hiatus.

“I never had any pill problems and I’ve never tried heroin in my life, but it’s been a real struggle for me to stay off the alcohol,” he said to Jenkem magazine in a 2017 interview. “But just as long as you’re surrounded by good people and you have something to do, you’ll be good. Like in Barcelona I wake up and my mission is to skate all day. I know being in Spain is the best place for me right now to not drink.”

Back in September, he described to People how taking a break from skateboarding—which he did to tend to painful bone spurs on his feet—facilitated his descent into problem drinking. Instead of skating, Margera was “making money by doing nightclub appearances, which basically was shooting photos and taking shots with the locals,” he said. This lifestyle came with plenty of opportunities to imbibe, but he finally reached a point where he acknowledged that “this has to stop.”

“I just reached a point where drinking got really old,” he said. “I just looked at the big picture, like, what am I doing?”

The 38-year-old reality star, who also appeared in his own MTV show Viva La Bam, has previously admitted that his drinking spun out of control after the drunk-driving death of his best friend and fellow Jackass star Ryan Dunn in 2011.

Margera went into detail about his drinking habits last year to Munchies. “At its worst, I would probably just wake up around 11 am and instantly start drinking vodka and purple Gatorade,” he recalled. “By the end of the night, I would probably have 10 pints worth of it. It was pretty bad. It was weird, because there would be times where I would go on a three-day bender of drinking and then five days of not drinking. When that five days ended, I would go on a two-day bender.”
