Introduction and Basic Services

Nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains, Balance Treatment Center was founded in 2011 by Dr. Ronald D. Sager, a board-certified medical doctor. The organization offers non-12 step based treatment to adult and adolescent clients. Balance Treatment Center operates locations in Calabasas and San Luis Obispo, California, and primarily focuses on holistic healing.

Facility and Meals

The Calabasas location is a licensed Mental Health Rehabilitation Center close to Malibu. The large house has an open and airy design with modern art lining the walls.

Balance Treatment Center services no more than six clients at a time. The residence features both shared and single rooms. The shared rooms can hold up to a total of three clients and features twin-sized beds, soft linens and leather sitting chairs. The single rooms come at an additional cost but include a queen bed, wooden dresser and private balcony. The luxurious bathrooms host oversized bathtubs, fresh towels and rainfall showers.

The house has a family room with a large flat screen TV, big chairs and couches as well as movies and magazines for residents to enjoy in their downtime. Outside, there is a large patio with Ping-Pong, board games, badminton and horseshoes. Clients are allowed to smoke on the patio and Balance Treatment Center also has private workspaces for vocational services or tutoring.

Personal trainers and fitness coaches come to the house four times a week to lead yoga classes, Zumba and martial arts. Although the house does not have an on-site workout facility, clients do frequent a local gym. They also often participate in walks on the beach and hikes in the local mountains.

The residence has a Tuscan-style kitchen, formal dining room and an on-site professional chef who prepares three meals a day. The chef makes healthy California cuisine mixed with lighter traditional style cooking. Balance Treatment Center uses a farm-to-table approach and sources local, non-GMO, natural foods, including organic diary products, sustainable meats and fresh seafood. Healthy snacks, coffee and cold beverages are always available. As an added unique bonus, clients have the option of visiting the farm from which the food is sourced and are able to pick their own fruits and vegetables.

Balance Treatment Center allows family members to visit on the weekends.

Treatment Protocol and Team

At admission clients undergo a full medical and psychological evaluation. Balance Treatment Center then creates an individualized treatment program that addresses each individual’s emotional, social, educational and physical needs.

The length of the program is based on the needs of the client, but usually lasts for 30 days. Treatment consists of a mixture of individual and group meetings utilizing a variety of evidence-based practices including CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and DBT. EDMR is also used occasionally to address trauma-based issues. Some of the groups offered include relapse prevention, processing, stress, nutrition and grief.

The organization also offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in both Calabasas and San Lois Obispo. Clients can enter the IOP directly as or as a step- down from the residential program. The IOP consists of both group and individual therapy. The length and intensity of the program is based on the needs of the client, lasting as long as he or she needs. The organization also offers an IOP for adolescents that includes additional family group therapy.

Balance Treatment Center is dual diagnosis and offers a variety of mental health treatment options for clients with potential co-occurring disorders.

Although it’s a non-12 step rehab and does not mention the 12 steps at all during therapy, Balance does facilitate a SMART Recovery group for clients interested in other forms of peer support.

All therapists are Master’s-level. The staff includes LMFTs, psychiatrists, medical doctors, licensed clinical psychologists, a nursing director and the executive chefs.

The facility also runs multi-family therapy sessions for family members of clients.

Bonus Amenities

Balance Treatment Center offers a number of holistic therapies such as art therapy, music therapy and pet therapy with local shelter dogs. Massages are included in the price of treatment and acupuncture is available at an additional cost. Neurofeedback and psychological testing are complimentary.

Summary

Balance Treatment Center offers high-end treatment in an intimate setting. The low number of clients allows for extensive individualized attention from clinicians. The program’s emphasis on good nutrition and farm-to-table eating are certainly amenities not all facilities can claim. While a lack of 12-step programming might be a deterrent for some, the myriad of other treatment options could be considered very appealing and ideal for creating a solid base for early recovery.
