Introduction and Basic Services

Avery Lane is a women’s residential treatment facility for substance abuse and dual diagnosis about 30 miles north of San Francisco in Novato, California. Avery Lane was founded in May 2017 by Camille Hildebrand, a recovering addict with experience in gender-specific treatment. The program is named to honor Hildebrand’s great grandmother, who inspired her to build a career helping other women recover.

Facility and Meals

The facility is separated into the “Skills House,” which is the clinical center where treatment takes place, and the “Life House,” which is the sober living environment where clients reside. Transportation is provided between the houses.

The Life House has one private bedroom that is available on a first-come-first-served basis. Shared rooms in the life house have two twin beds and spacious wardrobes. The home can accommodate a total of seven residents, who split three bathrooms. Porches with lounge chairs are available, as is an outside dining room.

The executive chef, working with a nutritionist and registered dietitian, prepares meals for residents. The meals are well balanced and can accommodate special diets for individual clients as necessary.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Avery Lane offers an on-site detox program. The process is supervised by the staff’s nurse, psychiatrist and medical director and generally lasts between seven to ten days.

Treatment is available in 30, 60 and 90-day programs. All care is based on of a proprietary method called the Four-Fold Passage, which targets treatment in four distinct phases: biological, psychological, social and spiritual. Each stage is moved through at the client’s individualized pace appropriate and also reflects the length of the individual’s stay. The 30-day stay largely focuses on stabilization and establishing basic skills and tools while the 90-day program includes more on one-on-one attention and addresses dual diagnosis issues.

Residents participate in both intensive group and individual psychotherapy sessions. Groups meet Monday through Friday and individual therapy is assigned based on need—generally twice a week for the first 30 days. Psychiatrist and doctor’s visits are also tailored to individual clients, and can meet from as frequently as every week to just once during the residency. Treatment approaches include DBT, CBT, Seeking Safety, the Emotional Freedom technique and the Neuro-Emotional technique. Specialized care is offered for those struggling with grief and loss, PTSD and trauma.

Schedules differ slightly throughout the week, with group therapy (including psychoeducation groups or holistic ones like yoga or meditation) from 9:30 am to 2 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and from 9:30 am to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays, followed by an activity or outing. Art therapy is scheduled once a week. Twelve-step programs are included as a part of treatment and those in the 90-day program must work steps during treatment. Daily journaling is also integrated into the program. As the client nears the end of the program, a discharge plan is created with their primary therapist.

Clinical staff includes a medical doctor/psychopharmacologist, a psychiatrist, registered nurses, a PhD-level psychologist, an LCSW, an MFTI, a yoga instructor, an expressive arts facilitator, recovery counselors and an equine therapy specialist.

Bonus Amenities

Experiential and adjunctive treatments include energy psychology, equine therapy, yoga, mindfulness and art therapy.

The women’s-only environment at Avery Lane creates a safe and calming place for women to recover without outside social pressure. The program’s small size and proprietary treatment protocol mean that each resident is ensured plenty of personal attention. This is an excellent option for women seeking a solid start to recovery.
