Introduction and Basic Services

With headquarters located an hour north of Salt Lake City in Logan, Utah, the Joint Commission-accredited Avalon Hills is a residential treatment facility that specializes in treating adolescent and adult females with eating disorders as well as co-occurring issues. The facility has two locations in Petersboro and Paradise. The adolescent facility was founded by Dr. Benita Quakenbush in 2003 and an adult house quickly followed in 2005. Avalon Hills believes in getting to the root of the behavuir rather than merely diminishing the symptoms of disordered eating.

Facility and Meals

The adult and adolescent facilities are situated in the scenic Cache Valley. The surrounding beauty provides an atmosphere of peace and serenity that enables clients to focus on their recovery journey as well as sustained, clean, healthy living. Avalon Hills can accommodate up to 24 clients at a time, 12 in the adolescent home and 12 in the adult home. The adolescent house is for girls between 11 and 17, and the adult home is for women between 18 and 60. Both adult and adolescent clients stay in estate houses equipped with a spacious floor plan, plenty of common rooms and beautiful views. Residents sleep comfortably in semi-private rooms.

The Avalon Hills culinary department is second to none. With the goal of establishing a positive and balanced relationship with food, clients are introduced to a wide variety of foods through diverse seasonal menus.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Avalon Hills provides an individualized approach that synchronizes traditional therapies, applied neuroscience and wellness methods. While the length of stay varies depending on the specific needs of the client, the typical stay is around 90 days with a minimum of 60 days for adolescents and 45 days for adult clients. To determine the most effective treatment plan, residents undergo an in-depth psychotherapeutic assessment before entering the program.

Clients keep a busy schedule including participating in individual therapy, group therapy, family therapy, body image groups as well as biofeedback and neurofeedback sessions. Avalon Hills utilize therapeutic modalities like ACT, CBT and DBT as well as experiential therapeutic activities including nutrition education, compulsive management, animal-assisted therapy and spiritual growth. Residents may also engage in holistic options like mindfulness, recovery maintenance, nonverbal expressive therapies and martial arts.

The facility puts a premium on aftercare. To this end, staff routinely follows up with clients as well as their outpatient treatment teams after leaving Avalon HIlls. The Avalon Hills team is comprised of social workers, Master’s-level therapists, addiction counselors, psychologists, dieticians, neurofeedback technicians, a nursing staff, a pediatrician, case managers and specialists like a yoga and equine instructors.

While weekdays are structured with classes and therapies, weekends include cultural activities, restaurant and grocery shopping outings as well as optional Sunday church services.
