Introduction and Basic Services

The Aurora Behavioral Health System is the largest psychiatric treatment facility in Arizona, and is one of several residential facilities in the Aurora Behavioral Healthcare network. Aurora Arizona treats clients struggling with substance abuse as well as those with co-occurring disorders. Other facilities in the Aurora network are located in Nevada, California, Illinois and Texas, with each offering a comprehensive continuum of care that includes detox, residential treatment, outpatient options and continued aftercare support.

Aurora Arizona has two Joint Commission-Accredited locations in Glendale and Tempe.

The Tempe location, Aurora East, offers programs for adolescents and adults, and the Glendale facility, Aurora West, provides programming for adolescents, adults and seniors through its Decades program.

Facility and Meals

Aurora East and West’s facilities total 175 beds, with 75 beds in Tempe and 100 in Glendale. Residents in both facilities are divided by age and gender, sleeping in gender-specific, double occupancy dorm-style rooms equipped with two full-sized beds and basic furnishings. The accommodations are hospital-style without many amenities, though the Glendale facility offers a full-length outdoor pool, and the Tempe a gymnasium. Both facilities have plenty of therapy rooms and common areas where clients can relax and watch TV.

The goal of Aurora is for clients to focus completely on their personal recovery. A strict dress code is enforced including no tank tops, high heels, hats or any clothing that is revealing or displays offensive language. Purses and handbags are not permitted, and grooming supplies should be kept to a minimum.

Both facilities provide meals in a cafeteria with healthy, well-balanced meals. Dietary requirements as well as preferences can be accommodated. Aurora East is tobacco-free. Aurora West has specific areas where smoking is allowed at designated times.

Treatment Protocol and Team

The client’s first responsibility is to participate in an assessment to help the staff create the individualized treatment plan. This assessment includes testing with a licensed medical professional. If necessary, clients go into the detox program. Detox typically lasts between five and seven days. Clients are evaluated daily and an around-the-clock medical nursing team is on-hand. After discharge, clients typically transfer to residential treatment but can also go straight into outpatient, if desired.

Both Aurora Arizona locations provide adult clients with a highly-structured residential program that is individualized and rooted in classic, evidence-based therapies. Residents participate in individual and group therapy as well as family sessions led by therapists that utilize CBT and DBT as welll as some 12-step methods. Psychoeducation is a consistent component, with an emphasis on relapse prevention, anger management as well as stress management. In addition, Aurora Arizona offers holistic therapies to balance the experience, including art therapy, music therapy, yoga, meditation and Tai chi. The adolescent and geriatric programs are similar in methodology, but include specialty groups for age-specific needs.

Aftercare is a major aspect to the success of a client’s recovery long-term. To that end, Aurora Arizona provides Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and standard outpatient care based off the recommendations of the client’s case manager. PHP provides six hours of daily therapy on weekdays. IOP is more flexible, offering a few hours three to five times a week. In addition, clients receive free aftercare after completion of one of the programs. This includes bi-weekly peer support and relapse prevention.

Both Aurora Arizona locations employ teams comprised of multiple psychiatrists, internists,

physicians, adolescent specialists and a nursing staff. For clients with co-occurring disorders, psychiatrists provide medication management for dual diagnosis support.

Bonus Amenities

In addition to the holistic modalities mentioned above, Aurora Arizona provides wellness classes like spiritual counseling, nutrition education and coping skills development. Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is also available.

Summary

Aurora Behavioral Health System in Arizona provides a comprehensive curriculum that integrates evidence-based methods, psychoeducation, 12-step programmning and holistic treatment. While these locations may not offer the high-end amenities and luxury accommodations of some other facilities at a similar price point, the highly qualified medical staff, thorough step-down system and individualized care make Aurora one of the best addiction treatment options in the state.
