Introduction and Basic Services

Located in the Carmel Mountain Ranch area of northern San Diego, Aurora Behavioral Health Care specializes in treating substance use disorders as well as dual diagnosis issues. Founded in 2000, Aurora San Diego is one of several residential facilities in the Aurora Behavioral Healthcare network. Other Aurora facilities can be found in Nevada, Arizona, Illinois and Texas, with all offering a complete spectrum of care to both adolescent and adult clients. Residential treatment, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), standard outpatient care and comprehensive aftercare are all available through Aurora.

Facility and Meals

Aurora San Diego is an 80-bed hospital-style residential facility just east of the Black Mountain Open Space Park. Residents are provided with nice, functional accommodations without many amenities. Residents are separated by age and gender, and stay in double-occupancy dorm-style rooms equipped with two full-sized beds and basic furnishings.

Aurora wants clients to concentrate solely on their recovery. To this end, residents are not allowed to bring electronic devices, jewelry or any clothing that is overly revealing or displays offensive language. Toiletries and grooming supplies should also be kept to a minimum. Clients enjoy a common area with games and a TV, an on-site gym and an indoor pool.

Residents eat all meals in the facility’s cafeteria. The kitchen boasts a lofty reputation consistently delivering delicious, healthy meals. Coffee and snacks are available throughout the day, and dietary preferences and restrictions can be accommodated.

Treatment Protocol and Team

Upon intake, clients engage in an assessment to determine what plan best fits their specific needs. This includes psychological and psychiatric testing with a licensed medical professional. If deemed necessary, clients start treatment in the detox program. This typically lasts between five and seven days, with around-the-clock medical supervision.

Individual and group therapy are the driving force of recovery at Aurora, utilizing evidence-based methods like CBT and DBT. The principles of 12-step are also implemented. Clients spend much of their day in therapist-run group sessions with a focus on psychoeducation and discussion. Clients also meet daily with a psychiatrist to assess progress. To this end, the length of treatment varies depending on the specific needs and the progress made.

In addition, family participation is deemed very important. Social workers liaise between clients and their family to create plans for aftercare as well as arrange family therapy sessions. In addition, aftercare is a major component to the sustained success of long-term recovery. Social workers begin aftercare planning during admission. Aftercare is free for all those that went through the residential program. As previously mentioned, clients aslo have the option to step down to one of Aurora’s outpatient programs upon completetion of residential treatment.

Aurora San Diego employs an experienced team comprised of physicians, psychologists, therapists, adolescent specialists, dietitians and a nursing staff. For clients with co-occurring disorders, a psychiatrist provides medication management for dual diagnosis support.

Aurora believes family is a huge component of a healthy recovery. The family program offers two sessions a week for those in residential treatment, and one a week during outpatient.

Summary

Aurora San Diego offers comprehensive treatment for adolescent and adult clients seeking care for substance abuse and co-occurring illnesses. The facility has fairly spartan accommodations and unlike many luxury rehabs, clients are not offered a lot of holistic methods or amenities, instead emphasizing the core program. What makes Aurora San Diego unique is the psychiatrist’s constant role throughout the program. For those clients seeking a straightforward approach with a focus on the medical side, Aurora San Diego is a great option.
