Amber Heard Calls Johnny Depp 'An Alcoholic and Drug Addict' in Court Documents

Amber Heard Calls Johnny Depp 'An Alcoholic and Drug Addict' in Court Documents

In court documents filed this week, actress Amber Heard called her estranged husband Johnny Depp “an alcoholic and drug addict” who relapsed on alcohol and drugs, contributing to his violent behavior. A week ago, Heard, 30, obtained a restraining order against Depp, 52, alleging domestic violence and claiming that the actor had been verbally and physically abusive to her “during the entirety of our relationship.”

The recent court documents are part of her defamation lawsuit against comedian Doug Stanhope, a friend of Depp’s who came to the actor’s defense by publishing an article in which he accuses Heard of blackmailing and manipulating her husband.

Depp has been open about his struggles with substance abuse in the past, but after the birth of his two children, now 14 and 17, he said he had cleaned up his act. "I'm a dumb-ass, and I poisoned myself [with alcohol] for years," he told Rolling Stone in 2008. "Now I understand things better."

In a 2005 interview with the magazine, he described a “darker period” of his life in the early 1990s when he was “completely unhappy” and using substances heavily. In 1994, he was arrested for criminal mischief after drunkenly trashing a hotel room, but was let off with a warning after paying more than $2,000 in damages. Of his drinking, he told Rolling Stone in 2005: “It was never about recreation. Not. Ever. That was never my motivation."

But Depp said his family, as well as taking on more challenging acting roles, helped him get his substance use under control. The actor told ABC News that his role in the 1994 film Ed Wood "was the rocket ship that took me away from that horrible, black, bleak time."

Over the past decade, it seemed the actor was working on maintaining his sobriety. In 2013 he said he was staying sober during his breakup with French singer-songwriter and the mother of his children, Vanessa Paradis. But according to Heard, he fell off the wagon in recent years.

"Depp had relapsed into a cycle of substance abuse," she says in the court documents. "His drug and alcohol abuse has increased dramatically in recent years, as has his violent behavior." The court documents also claim that "Depp has hit and kicked Heard on numerous occasions, has thrown objects at her, at one point nearly suffocated her to the point where she feared for her life."
