Introduction and Basic Services

Located in Orange County, California, AKUA Mind and Body prides itself on incorporating both traditional and Eastern medicine practices into its treatment program. The organization offers detox, residential treatment and Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP). A motivational speaker and businessman, Kenny Dewan, founded the organization, which provides 24-hour clinical care in a gender-specific environment.

Facility and Meals

Male and female clients undergoing inpatient treatment reside in separate homes. The outsides of the facilities are quaint and wouldn’t look out of place in any beach community. Certain bedrooms in each residence are designated for detox—they’re semi-private and bright, with vaulted ceilings, a fireplace, large beds and plenty of plants to keep the space lively. There are a six beds for detox and 12 rooms overall in each home.

The open-planned living rooms feature comfortable leather sectionals and therapy rooms have large couches and windows, and plenty of natural light.

Clients enjoy nutritional meals like a vegetarian wrap or grilled chicken pasta with peas, squash and zucchini, all of which are prepared by private chefs.

A private gym is available on-site for physical fitness, which is also stressed as part of treatment. A pool, sauna and hot spa are also available for use.

Treatment Protocol and Team

A stay that includes detox is typically 30 days long. Chemical detox is an option available for those for whom it is necessary. There are nurses and EMTs employed to ensure that clients have a safe detox process.

A more general holistic detox, however, is an integral part of the residential program in order to clean the body of toxins. At AKUA, detox also refers to other issues such as dehydration, imbalanced blood sugar, protein deficiencies, insomnia or compromised immune systems, which are all made a focus during treatment. These sorts of “detoxes,” though not medical, are customized to each individual’s needs. Included in this is an assessment by a psychiatrist and medical doctor within 24 hours of admission.

In residential treatment, clients participate in both group and individual therapy as well as life coaching and, if necessary, trauma therapy like EMDR. Mindfulness, meditation, life coaching and skills classes, health lectures, CBT and DBT are also incorporated.

The clinical staff at AKUA includes a medical doctor, a Doctorate-level psychologist, a nurse, MFTs and MFTIs, a Master’s-level family therapist, a registered yoga teacher, a Master’s-level trauma therapist, an LCSW, a licensed acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist, a registered dietician, a Reiki instructor and a number of case managers.

In addition to psychotherapy and counseling, which can include focuses on trauma, addiction, marriage and family, AKUA makes 12-step groups available and stresses participation in them as part of forming a support system during treatment and maintaining sobriety after arriving home.

Optional IOP can follow with or without housing, with locations in Costa Mesa, Newport Beach and Huntington Beach—or clients can also be referred to external locations.

Personalized aftercare plans are provided. Family and couples counseling is also offered.

Bonus Amenities

Acupuncture, yoga, meditation, music therapy and Reiki are all available as forms of holistic treatment. Extracurricular outings include hiking, boat and kayak trips, bowling, playing games of kickball and taking trips to the beach, where residents can surf, play volleyball or simply just relax on the warm sand.

Summary

AKUA Mind and Body is a great choice for those looking to integrate Eastern and Western practices into their recovery. It acknowledges that bodies can be weathered after a long period of substance abuse and works to treat underlying physical and mental issues as well as more obvious ones related to the actual addiction. AKUA is a pillar among the Southern California treatment community.
