Celebrity Rehab Ends After Five Alumni Deaths

Dr. Drew Pinsky says he's "tired" of taking the blame for former cast members' deaths.

Dr. Drew Pinsky's rehab franchise is closing its doors. After five seasons of Celebrity Rehab and a sixth season of non-celebrities entitled Rehab with Dr. Drew, Pinsky has announced that he will not bring back the show for another season, due to ongoing criticism from the media and addiction experts. Critics have argued that Pinsky was doing a disservice to his "patients" and the rehab community after the suicide earlier this year of former cast member Mindy McCready. Her death was the fifth fatality of a former Celebrity Rehab cast member in the last two years, giving the show an "unusually high mortality rate" of nearly 13%. '80s pop star Richard Marx even compared the addiction specialist to notorious "death doctor" Jack Kevorkian. "I'm tired. It's very stressful and intense for me," said Pinsky in a recent radio show, "To have people questioning my motives and taking aim at me because people get sick and die because they have a life-threatening disease, and I take the blame? Rodney King has a heart attack and I take blame for that?" However, some former cast members have praised Dr. Drew's work; Tom Sizemore, Janice Dickinson and Jennie Ketcham are among the still-sober celebrities who credit the show with saving their lives. Pinsky will still continue to host the talk show Dr. Drew on HLN, as well as host podcasts on the Adam Carolla podcast network.
